Well, I don't really care about the ads off to the side, what I care about is ads in my inbox. Why would you use Hotmail when you could use something that can hold appox. 500x as much as when using Hotmail. I like GMail.

I think the whole anti-GMail thing has been blown out of proportion. Have you ever seen a banner ad that says "Ads by Google" at the bottom? It's a paid service where the text is scanned for keywords and a relevant ad is generated. Example. It's a Halo RP. Look at the top banner ad. GMail only uses the same thing. Besides, do you really think they have hundreds of people from GMail reading your emails? I think not.

I hardly use any kind of email, so I won't be opening an account there.

From the first page of this thread: Gmail allows you a 10MB attachment size. That is nothing less than huge for any file I would ever want to send through e-mail.

That is interesting, because a friend of mine tried to send my a file which was just less than 9megs, and it wouldn't allow it. I also tried to send him one, and it failed again.
Hotmail however, worked just fine.

I've got Gmail, and I honestly don't have any issues with it. Everything is threaded which makes organization a lot easier and instead of taking up 6 spots in your inbox, 6 emails from one person take up one spot. The attachment size increase is nice though I haven't yet had occasion to use it. And of course the gig of space means I probably won't ever have to delete anything. Occasionally the spam filter catches something it shouldn't, like a promo email from Mile High Comics or such but that's it. I barely even notice the ads. Really I don't see why anyone receiving an invite would pass it up - it's free, I've had no spam issues, and it's bigger. Oh, and instead of having to dig through mountains of email to find, say, one with the email addy for one of my high school buds, you just use the search function. Superior to anything else out there.

Ranbir, it's most likely your SMTP server (i.e. your ISP) that doesn't allow this. Check your setting first. Good ISPs mail servers are typically designed to prevent spams and therefore also check against huge attachments.

It worked fine from my end. It was the gmail user who either didn't recieve it, or couldn't send the file.

GMail has been around for a while now.
And it turns out they’ve had less privacy issues than most any other company.

What do people think about this today?

Is it finally out of beta?

I see nothing fancy with it and just seems to stack itself on the shelf with the 'other email providers'. It isn't standing out as the must have because it has something others don't vibe.

I've got Live Mail with Live Mail desktop and Windows Live messenger, all lovingly connected. That is just cool.

Nah, it seems to be in perpetual beta. I think one <i>huge</i> advantage of it being invitation only (it isn’t hard at all to get an invitation these days) is the fact that it is not a spam domain. It is too much trouble for spammers to set themselves up through GMail.
