Totally true. I was trying the Three Kingdoms subreddit and that's on of the problems...

There's alot to catch up and talk about, I'm very happy to be back, and as James and others have stated, this is 20 years of Memories and
intellect here folks, I don't think there's another place like it on the internet.

I think someone is going to have to do something about the spam bots, if that's what was causing the site to lag before the forum architecture broke.
I kind of get a kick out of some of the comments I’ve read about how people fished around on the semi-broken (lots broken?) site for content that was still active. Even though it also makes me feel bad that I didn’t at least fix a tiny bit more so some navigation worked from the home page. Part of the fuss was that the home page depended on a lot of the code that was more involved to update.

Those pesky spam bots were always a nuisance, but not the thing that ever broken the forum. Instead, it was the march of time, and changes to web architecture that outright broke a lot of old code (especially in PHP). And then that combined with a really rough time for me and I just, sincerely, sunk. And then, with more time passing, other problems cropped up, and the task became bigger.

As time passed through more recent history I became more and more interested in tackling the challenge, and the loss of knowledge and community started to bother me more. And, finally, the host all the broken stuff was being maintained with rolled out some really shady changes (as a culmination of a company acquisition and efforts to squeeze as much money as possible out of customers), and I was looking at massive increases in expenses and more data being pushed offline. So I finally decided to get ahead of it... happy now that I am.

Thanks so much. It really brings me joy that people want to lend a hand this way. :)

I was trying to figure out how to post as a guest because I realized I had long ditched the email I used to register on the site. I thought guests could post in Public Council in the past? In any case, I was able to guess my password because I realized I used one password for basically all my logins back when I had nothing better to do had a lot more free time (and a lot less direction).

Happy Lunar New Year, y'all.

Hi Sean!

Thanks for the heads up. Guests should be able to post in the Public Council for reasons like this, but forum permissions were messed up a bit in the migration of data. :)

I've been logged out twice now from the site despite setting it to remember me. Is anyone else running into those issues?

Yeah, it's happened a few times to me too.
以其言非吾言者,是猶以卵投石也,盡天下之卵,其石猶是也,不可毀也。
To refute my principle with one's own principle is like throwing an egg against a boulder. The eggs in the world would be exhausted without doing any harm to the boulder.

That problem occurred to me even before the site downtime.

The last visited time seemed to be bugged too. My last visit was still 2019.

I’m curious if that still happens. Before there were various cases where you could land on the-scholars.com or www.the-scholars.com, which are technically different websites, but now it should do a pretty good job of redirecting to the www variation across the website.

One of the odd little adjustments I made recently.
