Yet Another Sānguózhì Translation Project

Unread post by jiuyangda »

For a long time I was a lurker without an account as I never had much to say. Now I do.

I am running Yet Another SGZ Translation Project, currently hosted at:
https://xuesanguo.tumblr.com/
Please forgive me for using a free blogging service; at present I cannot afford my own server.

My general criticism of other translation projects and translation compilations is (1) the compilation of translations from multiple translators leads to a lack of consistency and forces readers to adjust to new conventions every time they switch between entries, and (2) it is often difficult to detect errors in translation because most translations do not provide the source text.

Therefore, the general mission plan of this translation project that distinguishes it from others is that (1) the translation team is kept as small as possible with a clear lead translator and (2) all translation entries include the source text to make it easier for readers to cross-reference the translations for errors.

The obvious downside to this approach is that a smaller team is less able to proofread and notice errors. That is where you readers come in. I am looking for more sets of eyes to make these cross-reference checks and help improve the translations.

A word of warning: readers may have to be more advanced students with a extensive knowledge of sources to understand the translations. For the first draft at least, this translation is aimed at accuracy and source fidelity over readability. Presently there are no explanatory footnotes.

Great news! I'll add you to the links on Kongming's Archives. It's nice to see someone tackling translation again after such a long period of time with little activity.

Haha, you just might be my hero jiuyangda.

I wish you the very best luck, I suspect we'll cross paths quite a bit. I just wish my own meager knowledge of Chinese would be enough to actually assist you.
Alone I lean under the wispy shade of an aged tree,
Scornfully I raise to parted lips a cup of warm wine,
Longingly I cast an empty vessel aside those exposed roots,
And leave behind forgotten memories and forsaken dreams.

This is a great project! I've been reading your translations each week as they come out.
I bought Imperial Warlord and the tome. Hardcovers are awesome.

Good luck! I love the project and I will talk talk about you in my webpage (is in Spanish so don't get t oo excited :) )

And, by the way, as a translator myself, I think you are right in your decisions. I think most Spanish attemps to translate the Three Kingdoms novel had failed because the team was composed of 10 or more people.

I just wanted to say that you are doing great work, and I particularly enjoyed the biography of Fei Yi.

Have a question about a book or academic article before you buy it? Maybe I have it!
Check out my library here for a list of Chinese history resources I have on hand and my tumblr to see if I have reviewed it!

Do you plan on making a new website, or are you going to continue working through Tumblr?
