Re: Useful Online Resources
Time Travel is truly a marvelous thing. I am probably a slowpoke on this, but finding it made my day.

Re: Useful Online Resources
JSTOR has an article entitled Cai Yan and the Poems Attributed to Her by Hans H. Frankel. In it, Frankel translates poems that were supposedly written by Cai Yan and then discusses their authenticity. It is worth a read if you want to know more about Cai Yan, in my opinion, as he also gives biographical details about her. He talks at length about the historiography surrounding these biographical details/her poetry. Interestingly, he opines that none of the three poems accredited to Cai Yan were written by her, and in any case, all three were written by different authors. There goes everything I thought I knew about Cai Yan...
By comparison, I notice that in the Biographical Dictionary, Dr. Rafe de Crespigny adopts a more traditional view about Cai Yan, but notes 2 poems attributed to her. I suppose the third poem that Frankel translated is recognized by almost everybody not to have been written by her.

Australian National University rearranged their website not too long ago (sometime after june 23rd, 2012); therefore, the link to Rafe's online publications is out of date.
it's now at https://digitalcollections.anu.edu.au/b ... lang=en_US .

Unless I specifically say otherwise, assume I am talking about historical Three Kingdoms, and not the novel.
In memory of my beloved cats, Anastasia (9/30/06-9/18/17, illness), Josephine (1/19/06-9/23/17, cancer), and Polgar (4/8/07-3/22/23, illness).

Re: Useful Online Resources
Hi all. A little shameless self-promotion here, but to what I hope is a useful resource for those of you interested in the novel: I've recently started doing an English podcast where I retell the novel in a way that's more accessible to a western audience. If you're interested, check it out at http://www.3kingdomspodcast.com. In addition to the podcast episodes, the site also provides supplemental materials to help provide more context for each episode, and some of the materials draw upon resources from this forum. So thanks!
Re: Useful Online Resources
This isn't entirely Three Kingdoms related, but it is useful for Chinese history in general. If you've ever been on China History Forum, I'm sure you'll know of the illustrious poster known as Yun, who has written a considerable amount there on Chinese history as a whole, and also contributed a lot of knowledge about the Three Kingdoms.
Just so happens that he's actually a professor at a university now, and he has an academia.edu page where he's uploaded a couple of things he's written. Very interesting stuff. Academia.edu is just a great resource in general though. One of the better sites out there in my opinion. Not to mention it's free (as in free free, not "you must be in university to access this for it to be free").
Here's his page:

Enjoy. And don't get lost on the site reading all the awesome things, because it's really easy to.
