Koei Tecmo Wiki Has Recently Moved Away From Fandom
Hey there, I just wanted to let you all know that the Koei Tecmo Wiki has recently left Fandom in favor of going independent. While this news is kind of old, I figured it wouldn't hurt to share it here where there are tons of Koei Tecmo fans. Feel free to ask me any questions concerning the move and why it had to be done.

That is really intriguing news and thanks for sharing! Why did the wiki choose to move? After all, Fandom seemed to work for the wiki. I hope there was no bad blood. Regardless, I wish the wiki all the best!Humble Novice wrote: ↑Sun Nov 19, 2023 6:42 pm Hey there, I just wanted to let you all know that the Koei Tecmo Wiki has recently left Fandom in favor of going independent. Re: Koei Tecmo Wiki Has Recently Moved Away From Fandom
The wiki mainly chose to move because of Fandom cluttering each page with numerous ads that had little to do with the content being presented. The ads by themselves are not too obnoxious for computer users, but the majority of our visitors use mobile phones which makes things harder for them when navigating the wiki. Eventually, a group of fans contacted me and we made the decision to find a new hosting platform as soon as possible. We decided on one that had the least likely chance of being bought out by Fandom. It doesn't help that the company has been making a lot of controversial decisions that have been driving other wiki communities away such as generative AI for questions and the inclusion of political ads.ZL181 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 19, 2023 7:41 pmThat is really intriguing news and thanks for sharing! Due to Fandom's forking policy, we cannot delete the old wiki and have to leave it as is. Admittedly, this makes things more difficult for us as the new wiki has to compete with the old one for search engine optimization in Google. This has been a prevalent problem for wiki communities that have tried to leave Fandom for similar reasons. Fortunately, we seem to be doing much better on Bing's search engine. Despite the difficulties involved in running a wiki independently, I genuinely believe wiki communities are better off without companies ruining the experience for fans and users alike.
I'm also open to the wiki forming an affiliation with like-minded sites such as the Scholars of Shen Zhou. After all, this community is the go-to place for English references and sources on anything related to the Three Kingdoms era. If the staff is up for it, perhaps we can all discuss how to go about with the affiliation then.

Thank you for the explanation, it makes a lot of sense and is very friendly to the userbase! I really appreciate you migrating it to a hosting site with less ads because Fandom really loves ads, which is annoying! I have an issue with political ads as well, so hopefully the new hosting site does not delve into that or the AI stuff. I hope that this new site will be more prevalent as time goes on, we do not need a zombie site to be on the top of the search results. I would be happy to tell James to link to the new site rather than the old site if there is a collaboration, which sounds very interesting!
Continue the great work, you have contributed a lot to the ROTK community by adding the portraits!

The ads we have on the new wiki are more minimal and less intrusive, making navigation a whole lot easier for users. Also, we're currently adding new content not available in the old wiki at Fandom while revamping the older articles.ZL181 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2023 12:33 am Thank you for the explanation, it makes a lot of sense and is very friendly to the userbase! This is great news! The wiki is already a billion times better and I’ve bookmarked it!
Fandom is insufferable on mobile and I’ve stopped going to wikis hosted by them altogether because of their auto-play video that takes up the upper two-thirds of the screen…

Thank you very much! The main problem with being independent is having to compete with Fandom over SEO. My current goal for the wiki is to create enough distinction between the old and new wikis so that fans will move over to the latter completely while Google gradually shifts away from the Fandom pages in favor of ours. By the way, there's a browser extension called Indie Wiki Buddy that allows users to be redirected to potential independent wiki alternatives whenever they visit Fandom sites. The new Koei Tecmo Wiki has been included among them.Jia Nanfeng wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2023 3:31 am This is great news! The wiki is already a billion times better and I’ve bookmarked it!![]()

I suppose Fandom would throw a conniption if you included links to the new wiki on each of Fandom’s pages?
I think the SEO will improve organically as new Koei Tecmo games are announced / released, as long as the Fandom one doesn’t get updated.
Like if the Fandom site lacks a page for the eventual Dynasty Warriors 10, but the new wiki does have it, then surely the latter will be pushed to the top of search results for that game? (But I’m no SEO expert.)

Re: Koei Tecmo Wiki Has Recently Moved Away From Fandom
They actually have a community team called SOAP that blocks users from doing just that whenever communities fork away from Fandom. The more popular a wiki is, the more likely the company will do whatever it takes to protect their traffic. They only recently changed their forking policies after the Hollow Knight Wiki announced their independence.Jia Nanfeng wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2023 3:45 am I suppose Fandom would throw a conniption if you included links to the new wiki on each of Fandom’s pages?![]()

Kudos! A great choice. I didn't know about the problems with Fandom until a few weeks ago.
I've never stumbled upon the site myself in the past since the resources that I've needed have been on KA already, but it's always great to see communities revolving around KOEI.
