Guan Yu..your opinion on him
Re: Guan Yu..your opinion on him
Guan Yu is badass and really loyal to Liu Bei, which I admire. That said he isn't that amazing anywhere else. His killing of Yan Liang was amazing and a true feat of valor and courage, but other than that he fucked up several times, like raiding Sun Quan's supplies and provoking him, which contributed to his own demise.
Re: Guan Yu..your opinion on him
Guan Yu made mistakes for sure but I do think he was an impressive figure and one I like. His personal killing of an enemy general is very rare so testament to his prowess as a warrior. The reason his military record post that victory was somewhat poor was because of the sheer difficulty of the tasks he was given. I really do think he did a very good job governing Jing. Liu Bei took all the best generals with him (Huang, Zhang, Zhao, Wei) leaving Guan Yu with the B team. Guan Yu was also opposed by quite possibly some of the very best of the opposition (Xu Huang, Cao Ren, Lu Meng, Lu Xun). Guan Yu held them off for some time and built a strong army. Remember the records say something like Guan Yu in Jing province was growing stronger so he was clearly doing well and earning fame around the region. In the end he was tricked by Lu Meng but to be fair Meng's illness was real and clearly Guan Yu respected Lu Meng and Gan Ning's ability (from shallows incident) so his arrogance is possibly overstated at times.

Re: Guan Yu..your opinion on him
Apparently I never voted before? Or the results of the poll got reset
I have come... more used to the idea we will never got a full grasp of Guan Yu with so much of his career lost and even in Jing, the context for plenty of his battles gone. It makes it hard to judge some of the battles he had with Wei in Jing pre-215. I do think in recent years, though perhaps one of the last of the five, things have started to move away from the "he sucked" and taking everything in the worst light.
Killing Yan Liang was impressive. I would say, separated from what happened at home, his Fan camapign went reasonably well. While he was forced back and perhaps a bit of "so close", he had given Wei quite the scare, captured Yu Jin and projected Liu Bei's authority as well as his own. He was a figure held in much admiration even if we will never to see the full extent as to why
I do think the arrogance, though clearly a flaw that led to some poor misjudgements, have been overegged at times from character flaw to "choice of break? Due to arrogance."

Re: Guan Yu..your opinion on him
It does seem like there was internal resentment towards Guan Yu after his death so people within Shu may have blamed him for losing the province and Shu being weakened. Someone correct me if i'm wrong but his posthumous title seems a bit insulting like' suffered a great defeat' or something like that. It seems odd to grant a title which apparently was meant to be a special honour for someone who had given decades of loyal service to Shu's founder and then make it partially an insult.

Re: Guan Yu..your opinion on him
繆 was sometimes used as a equivalent to 穆 back in ye olden times, which is distinctively positive. So there is debate among the actual meaning. However the very anti-Guan Yu folk with take the instant no-thanks-not-reading-further route and just say "his title means he's overrated even though the other half is also positive but shut up this backs up my agenda".
I used to be very negative on the guy because lazy novel backlash reading hard brrrrrrr. Now? He's just boring. Wasting breath on him is so dumb. There a trillion other topics. Brave and talented? Sure. Bit of a dick? Sure. Next.

Re: Guan Yu..your opinion on him
As a Chinese, I am very familiar with both history and stories, and I have done a lot of research.
First of all, Jing Yang's position itself is very dangerous, with enemies in front and behind. Wu had been planning to attack Jing during Lu Su's time, but he never implemented it. The reason is very clear in the book, because Guan Yu is not only strong but also resourceful.
Moreover, it is stated many times in the book that only Guan Yu can protect Jing. Both Pang Tong and Zhuge Liang agreed, because this place has Wei in front and Wu in the back, and Jing is caught in the middle, and this place is very important. If it is not a very great general, It may not even be protected for a month, and it will be taken away by others soon. However, Guan Yu protected this place for many years. During this time, neither Wei nor Wu dared to use troops on this place.
Third, why Sun Quan married his daughter to Guan Yu was to win over Guan Yu. Why did he win over Guan Yu? Because fighting head-on, Wu is not Guan Yu's opponent.
Fourth, Yu Jin is not a small person. He has made outstanding military exploits all his life, but he was defeated by Guan Yu Dashui in Jing. We are modern people and can see everything from the perspective of God, but as a character in the incident at that time, this is no less than Zhou Yu setting fire to defeat Cao Cao.
Fifth, because he is very resourceful and brave, and absolutely loyal, how can such a person not be proud? But it was precisely because of such pride that Lu Meng secretly attacked him behind his back.
Also, the subordinate who betrayed him was Liu Bei's wife's brother, so he can't be blamed for not being prepared.
Guan Yu may not be perfect, but there is a reason why he is known as the God of War in China.
In the story, Zhang Liao regarded him as an idol, and all the generals were afraid of him. After Lu Bu died, he was the most powerful. In terms of intelligence, he protected an extremely important place, which was surrounded by enemies for many years. And in such a place, there is still room for the only son to defeat an enemy stronger than himself.
In history, a general must be protected by heavy soldiers. He can kill him on the battlefield. This is the only time in the thousands of years of human history! Kill the Marshal on the battlefield! Whether it is luck or strength, only this time!
You don't have to like him, but to tell the truth, what others in the book can do, Guan Yu didn't do it, but he might be able to do it. But what Guan Yu did, it is almost impossible for others to do it!

Re: Guan Yu..your opinion on him
As a Wei supporter I like him, or may I say I respect him as a talented rival leader & warrior. He was considered the leader of Shu's 5 Tiger generals. So he had to have been pretty to good, to be considered among the best of Shu. And also Cao Cao liked him, he was an excellent judge of leader/warrior types. If Cao Cao was trying to woo him, and win him over to his side, then that is really all I need to know. It speaks volumes to his respect of the abilities of Guan Yu. And also, Zhang Liao and Lu Meng were top talented leaders of the era, and both of them highly respected Guan Yu. So he had prowess as a leader/warrior, if both of them respected him like that.Anyways that is just my humble opinion.

Do not blame Guan Yu... Blame on Pan Tong
If he's not death on the battlefield than Zhuge Liang is still in Jingzhou and not going to Yizhou

Re: Guan Yu..your opinion on him
I personally blame Qi Wannian for not being born sooner. Had he been born sooner and allowed to cause chaos in the west, Cao Cao wouldn't have been able to divert so many forces to Jing to stop the assault on Fan and Xiangyang, therefore Guan Yu lives.
