I love stuff like his. Wonder how it was used.

These are amazing, especially the Shanghai one. Went to look on Google Map, that's pretty neat.

I am working on a map of China during the Three Kingdoms. I am about to start adding settlements. I'm planning to make maps that showcase provinces and commanderies as well.

I am not entriely sure on that, but it seems like you may not be using the correct shoreline, which has been changing throughout different periods.

This can be used as a reference.

Yes I know, I'm using a satellite image of the actual topography of China. Unfortunately, there wasn't any satellite during this period, so I didn't find any satellite image with the more accurate topography to work with (and I'm not THAT good to create my own satellite landmass). Still, it will be pretty close and as far as I know, only rivers and the coast have slightly change. Mountains and 95% of the other landmass are still pretty much where they were in the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

EDIT : The difference isn't major, but yeah there's one and I wish I was able to do something about it. I'll try to figure something out, but can't make promises.

EDIT : Also as a lazy excuse, I could argue that it could be interesting to overlay the settlements/commanderies/provinces of the three kingdoms over the actual China, serving as a comparison. x)

Sounds awesome! What sources are you planning to use?

As for the coastlines and rivers, yea that is quite difficult. There may be general reconstructions of approximate coastlines and large rivers like the Yellow or Yangtze, but the small rivers/streams generally lacked detailed data so it would be more difficult. But yea the differences aren't too significant as a whole.

I have many maps of the Three Kingdoms saved in a folder that I have collected over the years. I will use them all to find some kind of consensus, but I will prioritize those that originated either from history directly or the historian/academic community.

EDIT : I think I can do it. I think I figured the process.

EDIT : I think with the permission of James I will open a new thread specifically for this project of mine and to gather the input of everyone and helping me making this map as accurate as possible and figuring out what's what through the many contradictions that can be found between all the maps of this era. For instance, that big lake in the Central plain. Some 3K map have it, some don't. Some are as big, some are smaller. So in that new thread we could all work toward a consensus on similar issues/questions.

You don't really need permission to open a thread, except that you should not do it here in archives.

I wonder which software you are using, QGIS ,ArcGIS or others? Also I would love to know where you download that base satellite map :)

Looks great! Georeferencing?

Looks like QGIS? And yes I would want to get my hands on the satellite map too. Is it a basemap?
