Now I know this is not a Warriors game, but I talked about wanting to get the numbers of soldiers in Warriors games back down to PS2 levels and up the difficulty elsewhere here, and while I wouldn't be against the numbers going even lower, this game just feels like a bad fit. It's just you running around in comparatively confined spaces, taking out single enemies or duos, maybe trios, maybe with one ally, but often alone. And that just doesn't work. How can you believe you're a part of a battle with such tiny numbers and nothing going on around you? You could perhaps believe it with say a dozen people total running around on both sides and sometimes less. But this just makes it not believable. The Hu Lao Gate stage looks more like some sparsely populated minor outpost than the enormous battle it really was.
So in Nioh, you're tasked with hunting yokai during the warring states period. The missions are fashioned as though they are covert ops. I expect it's much the same here, especially so as Wo Long introduces a branch of skills focused entirely on stealth.

This is them wanting to continue their good work with Nioh whilst finding a new setting, rather than wanting to create a separate, battlefield based experience.
Thanks for that. I had no idea what it was about.

Yeah, you could have a stealthy change history thing, but that Hu Lao Gate, there were a couple of Sun Jian's guys running in at one point and you were taking over areas by planting a huge flag in the ground. You couldn't be much less stealthy than that!

The Lou Sang Village scenario we've seen in DW5XL would work here though. Fight Turbans through the village with the Brothers.

Fighting the Yellow Turbans is where the game starts, so you'll get that too. But yeah, a hallmark of the Souls-like games is smaller-scale combat against stronger foes. Getting ganged up on by three or more enemies usually means you die.

That Hulao clip I shared is an experienced player who knows how to fight well and where all the ambushes and such are. With some of the camera cuts that happen, I wouldn't be surprised if that player still had a few deaths before Lu Bu that were just edited out. As a new player you're not going to get through the stage that easily. The flag-planting should be setting your respawn point more than 'claiming land'.

I have not seen any gameplay footage, including the Hulao gate video that's been posted. I've played the demo and know I'm going to buy so I don't want to spoil!

Yeah, this game seems to require some stealth as well. Running in with weapons blazing isn't always the best idea in these types of games.

That said, I'm not sure how bad it would be if you're facing off against 2 or more enemies since it looks like your character moves pretty fast in this game. I know the Souls games, your character movement is kinda slow, including your attack speed. There's a bit of wind up to pull off an attack. Wo Long looks quick, like Ninja Gaiden.

Plus, if the AI is like DW, it wouldn't be interesting since my biggest complaint about the DW games is how useless most of the enemies are. You can be surrounded by 20 soldiers and maybe 2 of them would swing their weapons at you. The enemies seem pretty aggressive here even if there are only a few on screen.

Some of the PS2 DWs are better at that on the top difficulty, with DW4XL's expert difficulty undoubtedly the best. However, while it has the best overall AI, for aggressive grunts, Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 on hard is even better. They will all try to kill you! It's something they put in just for the player though, they don't react the same way to your allies or your allies to enemies. However, you're better equipped to deal with this attention in DWG3 than DW4XL, so for more of a challenge, I'd still go with DW4XL.

Playing the demo. It's decent. Clearly got that twist as Team Ninja does to introduce the supernatural elements. Never really a fan of them, I feel fighting giant monsters with their own unique attack patterns and hitboxes really undermine the majority of the game where you're mastering combat over other humanoids in true duelist fashion.

The morale system is neat, I like the indicators to let you know the threat level of enemies and how soon they're about to detect you. Combat animations are of course slick and the spirit system encourages a lot more fast-paced style of combat and not stupidly rolling around like a doofus.

Edit:

Oh of course, kill a boss but now it transforms and no autosave in between. Typical jrpg.

Interesting read through the list, but this one sticks out to me. It strongly suggests it's a short game, you'd beat the drum on your own site if it goes deep into the Three Kingdoms. If you wanted for some reason to keep it a surprise, or if you had it Final Fantasy Remake style where it was all set in Midgar but a massive expansion of that and thus a lengthy game still even if it didn't go very far into the Three Kingdoms period, you could state your game was long or depthy. We know it goes to Hu Lao Gate, it might well stop there, or they could have said it goes past that.

I beat the demo. I enjoyed it a lot. Outside of the 1st boss, I think the game is actually easier than something like Sekiro.

I think the best place to end the game is around the death of Lu Bu. Making Lu Bu a final boss is pretty fitting based on the lore.
