I’m feeling some of that “old” these days now, too...

And Ranbir are wonderful things.
Dong Zhou wrote: Sun Jan 15, 2023 8:26 am I have been good thank youAged a bit and my body certainly knows it! Moved house (which led to change of email) which was a positive move and settled in well, discovered this thing called twitter and reddit, did a podcast episode for askhistorians (and got the end year wrong, my brain just got stuck on the wrong year), working on a little project with Sun Fin.

I have been good but I have certainly missed this place
I’m happy you’re well. And looking forward to finding out more about that project. :)

Mercifully (?) I never got too caught up with Twitter. Seems like a crazy time in the Twitteverse.

What revived it for you?

My copy of Romance of the Three Kingdoms on the bookshelf has been tempting me for a re-read.

Hopefully not too much chaos on the forum’s account. :pika:

Feels wonderful to be back on this website ! On my side I am drowning in work... Except that in my free time I work on a translation of the Sanguozhi and on a podcast around the Three Kingdoms.

Meeting other fans on Twitter and Discord, mostly. The sense of community is a powerful motivator.

Maybe reviving this one will give you the final push towards reopening the book (;

James wrote: Sun Jan 15, 2023 6:47 pm Very cool to see This Old Neon still kicking! I’m having a hard time in the moment wrapping my head around the “eight years” part. Not hard at all to realize if I spend a moment thinking about it, but in my brain it doesn’t feel like that long ago when you first launched the project. It seems like that’s how pretty much all timelines work for me...

Thank you very much for the offer. I hardly know where to start! It seems like the worst of what I need to get done is taking some really old code and dragging it, kicking and screaming, into the modern era. With duct tape and nails. I do have a couple possible ideas I can chat with you about once some dust settles. The chat feature at This Old Neon seems really nice. How has that worked out?
I know exactly what you mean about the past 10 years seeming like they happened within the past maybe 2-3 years tops lol—same with little Berlin and little Tesla, who are both a decade old and both still little babies. I'm glad to hear she's still doing well!

I'll send you a PM about the TONe chat in a bit so we don't clog this thread up with site maintenance. :huohu:

That's such a ridiculous concept, but it was a lot of fun revisiting the game in an original way. I really should get back to streaming that, I think I left it about halfway through. Let me know if/when you get to the fight with Valvalis, I remember that one going off the rails in a hilarious way.

I'm now a fully qualified vicar and am now applying for jobs. Its been a big couple of years for me, as I'm sure it has been for everyone!
Have a question about a book or academic article before you buy it? Maybe I have it!

Oh, how life has changed. Four years ago I had just graduated from college, earning a degree in history and was preparing for a teaching job in Thailand, which gave me the experience I needed to start teaching in China. I taught English at the college level and found it quite rewarding, but I knew I needed to get back to school before it was too late. I am now studying Ancient Chinese Philosophy at East China Normal University in Shanghai, learning the language, and hopefully better understanding a bit more about the motivations and actions of people throughout Chinese history.

My love for the era has never been quelled and it warms my heart to see my old haunt return.

sorrow be turned to delight.
A nation destroyed cannot be restored,
the dead brought back to life.

I'm going to briefly catch you up on everything. So between roughly 2005-2011 I posted here on another account I've since last access to (username was something to do with Zhou Tai, thanks Dynasty Warriors).

When I first started posting, I didn't have the internet. SoSZ was the only website my Grandad allowed me to use when I visited his house, it was given his stamp of approval.

So, catching up, I'm a lot older now, made a new account in 2013 for lurking primarily. These days I help in the discord community. It's crazy I'm sat here posting now from my own computer in my own home. Such a contrast to where I started.

Kind of a rough couple of years for me, to be honest. I've been in and out of the hospital, bounced around between a couple of different jobs, and have had some financial difficulties. But I'm still alive and kicking, so that's something.

The weirdest thing about the last couple of years is how the kids have been growing up. My daughter's now in fourth grade and my son's in second. Yikes. How did that happen?! :P
Some more blood, Chekov. The needle won't hurt, Chekov. Take off your shirt, Chekov. Roll over, Chekov. Breathe deeply, Chekov. Blood sample, Chekov! Marrow sample, Chekov! Skin sample, Chekov! If I live long enough... I'm going to run out of samples.

Sorry it’s been a rough few years mate, I’ve also had some RL trauma since this site went down. But glad you’re back on this site! :D

Perhaps mentioning Sun Fin and I met for lunch is worthy of this thread. We should organise an IRL meet up with scale!
