Re: Three Kingdoms Units of Measure
Han chi was about 23.1 to 24.3 cm. If an integer must be chosen, use 24 because that is the figure from artifacts found in the tomb of Zhu Ran https://ctext.org/sanguo-yanyi?searchu=legion I am not sure if "legion" was used as a translation of a fixed measurement unit. But when a number is...

Re: Cataloging Reign Years (for Online Novel, Encyclopedia, KMA)
I appreciate your carefulness in reserving from linking all those events, and I admit that there was no explict explanation to this paricular term here , but the same can be said for most reign years on history as well as your adjective reading. If there must be one such evidence before reading of e...

Re: Project Feedback: New Romance of the Three Kingdoms Online Novel?
I think it should be 1 km = 2 li, not the other way round
One li in Han would be a bit shorter, about 350-450 m. The reference to 300+ li is a direct citation from a historical source. The real distance between Xiangyang to Dangyang is also about 120-140 km.

Re: Three Kingdoms Questions (You Ask, We Answer)
In chapter 39 of the novel (BT), there is a line: “Why not send the ‘Water’ brother?” said Zhang Fei. In reference to dispatching Zhuge Liang to deal with Xiahou Dun. Out of curiosity... why this reference? Zhang Fei was unhappy with Liu Bei saying "I have him as if the fish has got into the w...

Re: Project Feedback: New Romance of the Three Kingdoms Online Novel?
Why did three kingdoms.com and Moss Roberts translate wei-qi to "chess"? Seems odd to assume an audience isn’t up to the task of understanding "Go"? Maybe also because that the old rule of traditional Chinese weiqi is not clearly known. It could be different with modern "Go...

Re: Project Feedback: New Romance of the Three Kingdoms Online Novel?
I actually have a Chinese list of ranks present in the novel. If you can release the comparison tool first, I may be able to extend it into one with both Chinese/English.

Re: Cataloging Reign Years (for Online Novel, Encyclopedia, KMA)
The paragraph and lines before were focused on the months (ie. discussions on 三统 and 三微) to begin a year, and with that, the classics were consulted (考之群藝) and the meaning is apparent/could be manifested. To me, this whole sequence is more of an explanation for the change of months, rather than an ...

Re: Cataloging Reign Years (for Online Novel, Encyclopedia, KMA)
熙 all seem to connect with the "radiance" of political power/influence/authority itself. 238-257 延熙 Yanxi was to commence along with Jian Wei's first expedition 264-265 咸熙 Xianxi was to celebrate the defeat of Shu and re-creation of fedual system. 290 太熙 Taixi was chosen after receiving tr...

Re: Cataloging Reign Years (for Online Novel, Encyclopedia, KMA)
“黃初 Huangchu (Yellow Beginning)” Now does “Yellow” here refer to a concept beyond the color? I seem to recall it was used in such a way, but maybe I am mistaken. Either way, what is the nature of a “beginning” when it happens to be “yellow”? http://www.chinaknowledge.de/Literature/Diverse/yinyangwu...

Re: Cataloging Reign Years (for Online Novel, Encyclopedia, KMA)
“赤烏 Chiwu (Red Five) A legendary auspicious bird, gold-red in color that symbolising the sun“ Some efforts to search for information on this one are leaving me empty-handed. If the reign year is named after the bird, what shall we call the bird in English? “272-274 鳳凰 Fenghuang (Phoenix Yellow) in ...
