Lu Bu (with only 3000 troops mind you) was doing damage ticks of 1.That's three ticks of damage you're seeing here. Of course with 453 assault I wasn't doing that much damage back, but you get the idea.

Not just trait stacking but also look at tactic boosts like Eight Gates. Cao Ren essentially gives +4-500 defense if u take his trait and his tactic into account its crazy.
