This thread is inspired by Rolling Stone's listing of the 100 Greatest Guitarists (in their opinion). The list can be found here: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/ ... f_all_time
There's a lot that can be discussed from this list, I think. Personally, I'm gratified that the list seems to be pseudo-honest, drawing not just from the mainstream. Personal favorites that made the list:
My man Richard Thompson, at number 19
Robert Fripp, at number 42
Frank Zappa, at number 45
Tom Verlaine, at number 56
D. Boon, at number 89
Fred "Sonic" Smith and Wayne Kramer, at numbers 92 & 93
Greg Ginn, at number 99
Do you guys agree with the list? Disagree? Why? What changes would you make? For my part, the idea that Jack White is a better guitar player than Richard Thompson is laughable. Fripp & Zappa all the way down in the 40s is a misdemeanor at the least, as well. However, it is fairly hard to come up with new spots - everyone on the list, with a few exceptions, is pretty amazing in his own way. A very subjective ranking, doing greatest guitarists, that's for sure. But that also means there's plentyof room for controversy and discussion.
Is there anyone you felt should have been on the list that is nowhere to be found? Personally I was displeased to find that Phil Manzanera, Bob Mould and Adrian Belew had been left off the list.
