Huan Xiang San Guo Zhi (or Gensou Sangokushi)

Nobody's made a topic for this one yet, but I've got a bit of info on it, thanks to a little searching.

This game was translated into Japanese by Falcom (titled Gensou Sangokushi - notably, Suikoden's Japanese name is Gensou Suikoden :) ), and the official website for said translation is here.

Part of that website is a downloads section, which contains a link to download a demo!

(That part at least should be easily readable even if you can't read Japanese).

I'm downloading the demo now and planning to try it tonight. If I enjoy it, I might see if I can find someplace to import the game.

I also found a place to import HXSGZ2 for $30 and 1&2 for $50 (yesasia.com). Both are Chinese versions, though.

Oh yeah, and thanks to Lady Wu and Starscream for the other topics, particularly the screenshots. This series looks great.

...monsters all of you...
At least -you- gave a link to a demo!
*stares angrily at Wu and Starscream* :P

I'm gonna download it and play it just for the hell of it, I can probably figure out the controls without much issue, though I won't understand the story.

Hey, it's not my fault that 2 and 3 don't have demos!

"Gensou" means "fantasy". Gensou Suikoden is "Fantasy Suikoden", which makes sense because Suikoden is as loyal to the original novel as Fantasy Sango is to SGYY...

I'd like to believe you didn't have something to do with that...but....

And again I ask this question, if anyone's played this one that is:
Any cats or cows in this one, or the Liu Da et al stuff?

If I can't play it I'll endlessly annoy people with questions about it!
Hmm the story thing is translated on that page too, it's frightening me.

I think I'm nearly finished with the demo, as TC2.0 said it was about 2 hours long.

So far, there has been only one cow, just in the town. No Liu Da, Guan Er, Zhang San so far, though there has been a sworn brotherhood involved in the plot. There hasn't been a whole lot of humor parts, though, as I bet they want to get people interested in the main plot in the demo.

The only character who's shown up so far that I know of for sure is Sima Yi.

If anyone knows offhand who (if anyone) has the style 元直, that might help too, but I'm not as hopeful about that.

Also, how would 天若官 be gracefully translated? "Young Heavenly Government" is the closest I can figure, but they hardly explain much about... well, much of anything relating to it, really. Any help anyone can give would be appreciated.

On the Gensou Suikoden, I'd actually say Gensou Sangokushi is closer to the original, seeing as it's at least set in something based on TK, whereas Suiko's an entirely different world and all.

Also, I saw this game in an ad in Akihabara over a year ago and wondered what the heck it could be. I'm glad I was able to find out.

Btw, here's the Chinese homepage.

元直 = Xu Shu!

天若宮? (it's 宮 "palace" not 官 "government")

In the game it's some kind of magical academy (like Hogwarts?!?!) where people learn magic and swordplay and the literary arts and stratagems. Sima Yi, Xu Shu, Sima Hui, and the main character 姬軒's father 姬風 were all students of 天若宮 at one time or another.

I don't know how to translate 天若宮 because I don't know what the name refers to. 若 can mean "similar", so one interpretation could be "Heavenly Palace" (天 = heaven, sky). However, 若 can also refer to a fragrant grass (something like lavender?), in which case it'd be "Heavenly fragrant grass"?? A third interpretation is that 天若 is a truncated form of the saying 天若有情天亦老, which means "If the Heavens had passion, the Heavens would also wither from it" (i.e., the worries that come from loving someone makes you age really fast). This would also make sense in a way because the disciples of Tianruo Palace are not allowed to date or get married (in fact, Ji Xuan 姬軒's father was kicked out of Tianruo because he married Ji Xuan's mother, who was his classmate in Tianruo). Finally, the 若 could also be a reference to some Buddhist term that is translated with that character, such as 般若 (Prajñā---"wisdom") or 阿蘭若 (āraṇya---"hermitage").

In short, I have no clue. I would just call it Tianruo Palace and be done with it.

I must be really slow on uptake! I finally realised that the timeframe gets earlier and earlier from Series I to III. Series I involves Chi Bi battle (if there's Hua Rong Dao, there's Chi Bi battle); Series II is pre-Chi Bi with events like demise of Lu Bu and Sun Ce, death of Emperor Shao; Series III is the formation of Yellow Turban Rebellion. It's nice to see characters from Series I reappear in the later series, showing their "earlier forms"!! :D

Ahh, okay. That explains that character (so Xu Shu appears too...) and the mystery society of people who all look the same and are hunting them.

Thanks for the help, Lady Wu!

There should be a petition to bring this series to other countries.

So, the 4th title in the series would be something like "Fantasia Eastern Han", the 5th title will be "Fantasia Xin Dynasty", and by the 6th title we'll get back to Empress Lü and see how she anoints the Phoenix Blood Clan.
