1/4/07: Romance of the Three Kingdoms Officer Encyclopedia!

<a href="http://kongming.net/encyclopedia/"><img src="http://kongming.net/i/m/holiday/encyclopedia.png" alt="Three Kingdoms Encyclopedia!" title="Romance of the Three Kingdoms Officer Encyclopedia!" class="fr szhidden" height="32" width="50" /></a>Today I’m introducing something very special, very cool. It took us over a year to get here from when the idea was originally conceived and at times I wondered how long it would really take for it to launch. But there is no need to wonder any longer.

Introducing the <a href="http://kongming.net/encyclopedia/">Romance of the Three Kingdoms Officer Encyclopedia</a>!

I’m sure you will discover, upon viewing it, that this is truly an excellent piece of work filled with useful information and links. You can search through our database of over 1,000 officers to view all the information we have recorded on them along with other handy bits like links to articles and biographies, differences between history and fiction, family relations, introductory biographies and more. Like most database-based sections of this site you can also search by custom text, category, or kingdom. You can also click on an officer’s name to hide most of the navigation tools and display only that entry—ideal for sharing links to specific information.

But here’s what makes the <a href="http://kongming.net/encyclopedia/">encyclopedia</a> so special. It isn’t just a small project maintained by me—it is based on the upcoming Kongming’s Archives Development Project. Anyone in the Three Kingdoms community, having requested authorization (we’re not Wikipedia—standards and accuracy will be maintained) can update and edit information viewed through this tool (and elsewhere across the site)! When complete, this encyclopedia, while already very useful, will continue to grow at a steady pace until it becomes a truly phenomenal resource for Three Kingdoms information!

Would you like to participate in this project? Please <a href="/viewtopic.php?t=14111">read about it</a> at our forum (no registration necessary to view) and, if you want to share your knowledge, all you have to do is thoughtfully <a href="http://kongming.net/email/?function=devkma">fill out our Development Project Participation Form</a>. A number of people in our community are already participating (in some cases for over a year now) and it is with great thanks to them that you can already enjoy what you see in the <a href="http://kongming.net/encyclopedia/">encyclopedia</a>. Soon we will flesh this process out into a much more user-friendly explanation and introduction and we will re-announce it when the time comes.

Oh, and one more thing. Mozilla and Firefox users, as you may know we’ve already created a <a href="http://kongming.net/search-plugins/">Kongming’s Archives search plugin</a> which you can use to search our site directly from your browser. Well, we’ve now created a <a href="http://kongming.net/search-plugins/"><i>second</i> plugin specifically for this Three Kingdoms Encyclopedia</a>! Need some information on an officer? Enter their name into your browser and read up in only a few clicks!

We’ve also got several other goodies to introduce. Member Dong Zhuo has prepared new <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/bios/type.php#sgyy"><i>Sanguo Yanyi</i> Biographies</a> for <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/sgyy/zhangren.php">Zhang Ren</a> and <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/sgyy/jiangxu.php">Jiang Xu (Boyi)</a>. Moses Kong (aka Jiang Zhi) has also shared with us <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/writings/jiangzhi/long_united_must_divide.php">his essay on the Rise and Fall of the Han Dynasty</a>, now added to our <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/writings/">Three Kingdoms Writings page</a>. We’ve got other things we want to do, that people are looking forward to, and want to announce, but time is short. We hope to get around to them soon.

We hope you are as excited about this as we are!

This is an ace! And yes, it's very special and helpful, also it helps us so much especially finding the information on the officers, must be really hard to code this. Thanks and this is very impressive and it's a very hard work. I'm sure not much people can do this but it's good to have you in RotTK community! :) Thanks James!

Thank you kindly, Chin. Yes, it really was difficult to code. While most projects on Kongming’s Archives usually take anywhere from an evening to half a week to code, this encyclopedia took months. If you factor in the tools behind it (the Development Project) it has taken years… but it is worth it. I really enjoy using it myself.

And another really cool thing has happened. Researching information inside it has rekindled my own interest in the Three Kingdoms (to the extent that I’m reading and debating again). Good times. :)

I'll be sure to look into it. I hope it has quite the details for most officers!

By the way, how are things going for TNDOAE? I don't remember everything, but I think I put some information somewhere on lordyuanshu.com, and screenshots are in another post here. Also, the game is now uploaded!

That blurb at the end was mostly meant for you. I hope to put TNDOAE online in the next update along with the English patches for RTK 10 and 11. The content seems related so it seems the most logical place. And I saw that you updated the file with midis, you’ve posted the screenshots, and I have all I need. We’re set!

That's good to hear. I'm looking forward to it. As I may have said at another time, any contribution would be much appreciated.

Yes James, from the moment I saw it, it was like OMG, this might take me at least a year or ages to code it, but you did it in few months, you're really as smart as Kongming, that's why you're Kongming's Archives site founder :)

After only taking a brief look over it, I can't tell you how impressed I am with how the project has turned out, James. A great accomplishment. I can't wait to see the end results of the project as a whole.

Hehe… thanks. I’m really just a web designer that likes Three Kingdoms, though. :)

Aside from a few feature additions here and there (I’m working in a quotation feature as seen in Cao Cao, Sima Yi, Liu Bei) much of this is going to shift to involvement in the development project. The more people are adding information to that, the more the encyclopedia is going to become a valuable resource for people. The next big announcement will be the official introduction of the development project – and I wonder how many people will be interested in it.

I realise I don't post nowadays but I do still lurk and as I'm reading RotTK right now (and loving it <3) I continue to use Kongming.net as my favoured spot to look around when a person or event sparks my interest (or if I've played Dynasty Warriors and get an urge to wander the games section :P).

I just have to commend you on your efforts James. This encycolpedia is a stroke of genious and I've been using it since I stumbled upon it on the rotating content on the home page. Kongming.net has provided me with incredible insight into this enchanting and significant era and this beauty has made it easier to find information and all the more more enjoyable (pretty colours and a sleek layout always impress this modest fan's simple mind). Truly top quality; I can't wait to see how it grows. ^_^
