Howdy all. Like quite a few people on this thread, I first joined this forum in about 2005 or something like that but that is a username and an email address long retired no doubt. I tried a couple of combinations but no luck.

I haven't read the books in about 15 years (via the usual DW, ROTK games route) and I'd completely forgotten all about them until volume 2 fell out a box I was moving in the loft the other day. I've dug out the first volume out and started giving it a read today and it all came flooding back. Looking forward to getting to know you all (again).

Hi folks, I joined the board because I needed some outlet to talk about my love for Three Kingdoms. It has been an interest of mine ever since playing Dynasty Warriors 3 as a teen. Nowadays I tend to be more into the academic side of things but I am slowly watching (and enjoying) the Three Kingdoms tv series.

In the real world I'm a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and work in a university in the UK. Though I have taught Chinese history (mostly medieval to early modern) my area of interest is actually Nepalese literature and Sanskrit. Other than that, I enjoy ice skating and writing short stories.

I remember pouring over Kongming's Archives and the forum when I was younger but I never joined. It's good to see that the forum format is still going, most things these days seem to be Facebook groups or Discord servers. :)

...we are switching over to discord server tomorrow :P

Welcome to the forum Yaoyu. I think most of us got our interest from early DW games then migrated on (sometimes via novel) to 3kingdoms history, congratulations on being a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and working in a university. I'm glad you took the plunge to join us and hope you have a great time here

Hi my name is Stat, I'm from the Netherlands.
I have lived, studied and worked in Japan for a few years. I'm now focusing on Chinese (I'm currently writing this while in Kunming, Yunnan).

I think my first introduction with Three Kingdoms was with the ROTK on the SNES. A Chinese friend said to me, "Dude they made a video game of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, we need to check it out". I had no idea what he was talking about. Then he lend me the CCTV version on videotapes, no English subs, but I was addicted anyway.

I read the romance novel in college, but my addiction started to grow when I met my Chinese wife. My father in law, is a Cao Cao fan and at that time (around 22 years old) I was a Liu Bei fan. We had many discussions about who was better, however he was often talking about things that was not in the novel, he had gotten his knowledge from History of the Three Kingdoms. He did not care for the Romance version. "A history book about Three Kingdoms, does that exist?" Boy was I in for a ride.

I think most of us, after reading the Historical facts, become a Cao Cao fan. However I Think all the three kingdoms were great. All three wanted more, which lead to treachery among them. I still believe Liu Bei could have achieved a great alliance with Cao Cao, but his ambition blinded this possibility. I also think that Cao Cao would have been the best ruler for a unified China. And Sun Quan kind of gotten his wish of an independent Southland, I always feel that Guangzhou & Hong Kong were his heirloom.

Funny thing is that there was a Cao Cao series, which was historically accurate. No network wanted it. It took 5 years before, I believe, Anhui TV televised it. No one was interested in a historical accurate version. I remember when the 2010 TV version came out many Chinese fans complained it was too freely in its interpretation of the Novel. Because it is one of the Four classics, most Chinese do not want to see that changed on the TV or big screen, even if the historic facts are often more awesome.

I know that many writers are biased when it comes to Thee Kingdoms, but I'm happy to see here at Scholars of Shen Zou that you guys are open minded and have a lot of love for this amazing historical event.

p.s.
Every time, when I'm in China, I try to visit as many historical related Three Kingdom sites as possible, unfortunately many are fake. However there is a great temple dedicated to Konming in Chengdu, which is most likely fake, but a nice commercial place for Three Kingdom fans to visit.
