Kong's 100 Greatest 100 Greatest Lists

Unread postby Kong Wen » Tue Jun 05, 2007 4:29 am

Alright folks, this thread is inspired by the discussion that has been taking place in Liu Yuante's 100 Greatest Guitarists thread, which is in turn inspired by Rolling Stone's list.

Since "greatest" lists like this are completely subjective and the criteria used to judge and rank entries aren't set in stone, I've decided to put this in the AE&I subforum as a form of acknowledgement of the fact that my own lists are basically made-up and not objective measures of quality at all. Long sentence!

What I'm going to do in this thread is create a number of "X Greatest" lists based on music. I'll try to make them manageable sizes (they may not all be Top 100), and I'll try to describe how I created the lists so they're not just in some mysterious order.

EDIT: One important thing to bear in mind is that you guys are very free to disagree with my taste in music. :) I'm going to try to have the first couple of lists create themselves with as little input from me as possible (e.g. they'll be based on play count, number of tracks per album, etc.). For those lists, I will also try to include some numbers so you can see exactly what's going on.

I'm working on one right now. I'm going to start with an easy one while I figure out how I want to compile the others.

The first one I am going to do is Kong's Top 100 Most Played Songs. Bear in mind that this list is merely going to be based on how many times I have played each song, and is not a ranking of how good or important I think these songs are. As such, the ranking of the songs will be heavily skewed towards albums that I listen to a lot (in my car, for example). Like I said, though, this is an easy start because I only have to use my iTunes stats to create the list.

In an attempt to counter-balance the effect of the play count, I am going to try to take my star-ratings of the songs into account as well. This way, songs with higher ratings will get a boost and songs with lower ratings will be bumped down the list. A ***** rating could boost a song's play count by 25% and **** by 10%, while a ** would reduce it by 10% and * by 25%. This way my own perceived quality of the song will have some influence on the final ranks.

Alright guys, thanks for your patience! The first list is here. As expected, the first installment in this series is Kong Wen's 100 Most Played Songs, adjusted for my iTunes rating. This list is current as of 01 July 2007 at 12:00 AM.

As I mentioned before, the primary ranking criterion is the number of times I've listened to a song (iTunes play count, defined as playing a song from start to finish). The songs are then adjusted for my iTunes rating as follows: * (0.75), ** (0.90), *** (1.00), **** (1.10), ***** (1.25).

In the case of a play count tie, the song that reached the play count first gains rank priority. In the case of a tie between a song with a higher play count and a song with a lower play count but higher rating, priority goes to the song with the higher rating (this didn't happen in this list, though).

Here they are in reverse order so they read like a count-down (the winner is at the bottom of the list). I hope you guys enjoy! Maybe you'll find some new tunes you'd be interested in listening to. As always, discussion of the list and the songs in the list is more than welcome!

Remarkably, one song (Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses") made the Top 100 twice (owing to the appearance of live and studio versions)!

I'm quite amused that "Apeman" is leading, and leading by so much. I would have thought "Hey Bulldog" would at least come closer, if not be at the top.

Just curious, what decides on what goes on your playlist? How often do you re-pick the items for the list?
