Futile
I left.
The dawn of a forgotten world,
the essence of riddle,
‘tis true, it puzzled me.
I felt it,
I heard it.
There was no return, no future,
only what was lost in time.
The chilly breeze of mystery,
‘tis true, it was enchanting.
As I went and as I grew,
it became too clear,
like a swift sunset,
like a glimmering star
in an ebon sky reborn,
at the end of the horizon.
I was there,
I saw it,
by infinity, a warm light,
‘tis true, it inspired me.
Life, but a mere scratch on the mind,
preserved in neglected memories.
And gazing upon the vast plains,
motion and stillness,
the sun touched me,
one last time.

A poem I wrote a while ago. It's the first one I wrote that I actually like. Other attempts have been a failure, especially because english isn't my mother tongue, but my poems in dutch (native language) aren't any better than my english ones tbh.

@ZenZach: I always liked short poems, not only so I wouldn't have to read that much :) but even more because I think it's difficult to express yourself with so little words and do it good.

I rarely write poems in English, I love writing poems in Indonesian better. Here are 3 poems in English I have made so far...

Mermaid

mermaid, mermaid
her skin fair as pearl
endowed by memoria
she sang for the Doria
she put her men to deep
embracing sleep
mermaid, mermaid
forgive me, I said
I stand in the stern
with my flickering lantern
don't cry, I said
it was just a stab
it was just a cold
mermaid, mermaid
stay in my bow
sing for me so slow
soon your blood will dry
and so will your cry
mermaid, I said
look how beautiful
the way you laid
in my galleon's bow

*****

An obsession, of a mermaid, and how I will put her in my ship if I ever met one (and if I have a ship, in that case).

Face Me

Step into the game
Don't let your shudders prevail
Face me, look at me in the eye
Stand as my courage

Forget all the pain
Listen to how they will hurt you
You won't last, just face me
And stand as my courage

Reach the frame of your fear
Look for my hands
You're standing right in front of me
Face me, your only truth

Don't remember those sad place
As long as you're with me
Stand in front of me
And you will be my only faith

Little prince, hold to your fear
And in fear you will find me
Reach me in the edge
Face me, my courage
*****
inspired by Guildford Dudley, hushband of Jane Grey the 9 days queen

Dear Silence

Dear Silence,
I humbly ask your presence
when no one mind their existence
and I sit idly while I listen.

I sincerely ask your mercy
when no one dares to fancy
the meaning of words and reality,
and no spoken words describe infinity.

I merely ask for your guidance
for the road I travel on is abundance
in treachery and rotten violence
whose mother is the void of punishment.

Dear Silence,
I desperately ask for your embrace
for they have no face, nor grace
and they stain the air in disgrace.

Awesome, Paler Than Moon. You've got a good sense of metre and rhyme, but I think your last poem is the strongest for the use it makes of punctuation, and the 'void of punishment' as mother to violence - deep. Good image.

This one I wrote from my creative writing course.

WeiWenDi wrote:Two-Dimensional

Snow.

Blank page, blank line, blank verse.
Red, green, blue
Scratches on the surface
Of the glass that cuts
Into your eyes,

Just as surely
As the hard edge
Of the water
Cuts into your feet,

Water meeting water.
Everything is dry,
But you can still feel the sting
And the calm
Before you
Drown.

A promise is
The thin film
On the surface
Of the guitarist’s
Shout toward the sun
However far it chooses to rise.

The balloon floats
And is washed ashore
On rocks that flake
And crumble
On the water’s edge.

A knife pressing down
With plenty of room to play,
Dance with no
Thickness. No
Effort.

Don’t think. Dance
With feet and shoulders,
Like a puppet
On a string
Of tears
Even as the knife’s edge
Cuts it away.

The water in the sky
Always shouts back,
Never in guitar notes.
Just after the plunge,
Just before the leap.

Blown to burning pieces.
Gears and spark plugs,
Fire in the water,
In the snow.

Liu Shan Poem

My poem isn't probably isn't going to be as good as the previous ones on this page, but here it goes.

Liu Shan

Liu Bei did rise
After sacrifice
The Han his desired prize

His son Liu Shan
who'd lost his mom
Is now hated in history's eyes

Had not Zhou Yun
Young Shan rescued
He would have surely fell

Along with she
Whom so piteously
Cast herself into the well

Alas too fast
He lost his dad
And thus his reign had begun

It went well early on
With Zhuge Liang
By his side so he was was questioned by none

Took Empress Zhang as his wife
Her father lost to a knife
Who at this point could tell

That his incompetency
Along with Jiang's enmity
Would doom the Shu Han to hell

So, um, yeah, generic other hesitant word, that's it.

PS. Jiang Referring to Jiang Wei, and I know that and the Zhuge part were bad but it was getting hard to keep up the rhyming scheme and the meter.
Call me a quitter, so what.

Wrote it a while ago when I was bored in the english literature course (here in belgium), hope you like it.

Crossroads
By glittering brilliance, ebon cloak
A breeze of salt, the skyline broke
Golden Fleece my mind enlights
Lights in eternal morning nights
Burning bright in heaven soon
Away I fled, away I ran
Back to where it all began
Haunting shadows, darkened moon
Scarlet dots in full music flow
A visor’s true laughter, lo!
And at the crossroads in doubt still
Temptation struck by inner chill
I know that whatever path I take
I'll walk it offroad, alive, awake.

Lu Bu’s Victory

The alliance had reached the gates of Hu Lao,
Dong Zhuo’s hopes were beginning to fall
The warrior so strong headed for Yuan Shao,
Lu Bu, his might would conquer all.

But wait! Three men had stopped him in his tracks
Brave Yide, Xuande and the tallest, Yunchang
Swords strike, spear thrusts, green dragon attacks,
Yet the halberd of Lu Bu scythed and sang.

Three brothers fell in this terrible fight:
Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei of Yan,
The eighteen lords fled, and then took flight,
Xuande would never restore the Han.

Now but two men lay between him and the throne,
The prince of Chen Liu, Liu Xie, and Dong Zhuo.

For a while I was struggling with what to do with the poetry in the novel. It is an aspect that I would like brought out a couple in the screenplay. I've decided to have the story driven by a graffiti artist leaves snipits of poetry that act like a chorus around the city. I however am not a great poet. Are there people out there interested in collaborating on the poetry for the script?

Something I wrote awhile back for one of my simrtk characters, a young civil officer during the Yellow Turban rebellion had time to think. Poem writing is not my strength but I'm fairly happy with this one

Oasis of Peace in a Troubled Land

I sit here, alone
dressed as a simple peasant
in such a chaotic land
I find a place of peace

I sit here thinking
about all that I risk
about all the friends I will miss
about my very first kiss

However outside this place
I know that war shall come
the waters ebb and flow
the grass sways

why should they care for what humans do?

I serve a sickly dynasty
its ruler just like a child
his trusted men?
power hungry corrupt eunuchs
The Ten ruin the land and bring chaos
yet they do not see it

He Jin commands the forces
once a man of talent
the simple butcher is now bogged down
he can not stem the tide

warlords rise all over
as the dynasty slowly dies
a peasant army has arisen
the Way of Peace has come

Hope has come from the rebellion
the people flock to them
the Imperial Army has been crushed
now it makes a stand

I do not think I will see
the end of the chaos
I do not think
I will find love

This drunkard is arrogant
a poorly dressed man
unproven and unloved

I see all my dreams crash
I see the end of peace
I see war

and I can do...nothing

The Han shall die
I will be among those fighting
to restore peace
to this wretched land

So my hidden love
will you help me?
will you love me?
will you risk it all?

xxxxxxxxxx

This one about Liu Feng's thoughts before he died, not so happy with and probably more a reflection of my abilities.

Liu Feng's Last Moments

Father
Why won’t you hear my plea
Father
Will my death sate your anger

I was born as Kou Feng
But my parents died
Liu Mi took me in
You take me away from him

Father
I was so proud that day
Father
Were you ever proud of me

I served in Jing
At Bowang
At Xin Ye
At Chi Bi

Father
You left me at Jiang Ling
Father
I stopped Zhou Yu for you

I fought with Wei Yan
I captured Gao Pei
I drove back Zhang Ren
I seized Dingjun Mountain

Father
I did my best for you
Father
Was I only a pretend son

I was unable to stand
Against Cao Zhen
Or Xu Huang
But I took Shangyong

Father
I governed Shangyong for you
Father
I wish I had never seen the city

Guan Yu marched to Fan
Xu Huang drove him back
While he was gone
Lu Meng stole Jing away

Father
Liao Hua came for help
Father
I sent him away

My Uncle did not approve of me
He insulted me in your ears
He drove us apart
He always had a place in your heart

Father
I could not save Uncle
Father
It was better that I hold Shangyong

You promoted me
I thought just maybe
That it was to bring us closer
I was such a fool

Father
My friend deserted
Father
I fought him for you

Meng Da sent to me
A letter advising me
To change to Wei
I stayed loyal

Father
I was unable to bring him in
Father
Would it have saved me

Beaten at Xiangyang
Shangyong and Fangling
Deserted the Han
I came home defeated

Father
I pleaded my case
Father
I am so very sorry

You eat as a man
You dress as a man
You are no more
Then clay or wood

Father
Your words were cruel
Father
You condemn me to death

Uncle cost you Jing
You execute me for him
Liu Shan is your real son
He is the one you loved

Father
I was never a son to you
My time has come for me
To go to the Golden Springs

Goodbye Father
I wish I had made you proud

I'm very sorry for that.

Thank you for your comment WeiWenDi. I like your poem too, it's beautifully morbid :3
