Lady Wu wrote:Just curious, what decides on what goes on your playlist? How often do you re-pick the items for the list?

I like to spend most of my time listening to newly-acquired music, to stay on top of new stuff, so the stuff on this top 100 list usually only gets played when I'm listening to certain kinds of playlists.

1. I often make mix CDs and playlists for people, and a lot of my favourite songs will show up on those. Since they involve listening through the CD/playlist a few times, that can boost the play count of top songs. (Lady Wu, you'll find that your CD contains a lot of songs from this list. ;))

2. I often make driving CDs for myself for the NS-NB drive. These CDs are usually made up of songs that I already know well, for maximum singing along / distraction / boredom killing (Best of the Kinks, Best of Psychedelia, Best of 1972, etc.).

3. Another way a song can shoot into the top 100 is if I have just found it and really like it. Most of the stuff that is on there from Then Play On, for example, is from when I first got into Peter Green and listened to the album over and over again.

Now, my iPods and my Party Shuffle are both populated by songs that have a *** rating or better, a play count under 10, and a track length under 8:00, so those media aren't really contributing to this list because of the second requirement.

I don't really know how "Apeman" got so far ahead. The top 5 were all neck and neck for a long time, and it has only been recently that "Apeman" pulled ahead. I think it's probably just because it's been going on more CDs for people lately.

Oops, forgot about this <s>thread</s> <s>forum</s> the internet.

Here is Kong Wen's Top 100 Albums, sorted by plays per track [PPT], accurate as of 12:00 PM, Saturday, 13 October 2007.

I've totalled up the number of times each track from an album has been played, and then divided that by the number of tracks on the album. This helps prevent the top spots from being taken by huge triple albums (since albums with more tracks would have an unfair advantage if the rankings were done strictly by total play count).

In the event of a PPT tie, the higher rank goes to the album with more total plays. In the event of a total plays tie, the higher rank goes to the longer album (more time played). No further level of tie break was required.

Rank. Artist, Album (Year; comment): total plays / # tracks = PPT

Why the heck not!

Kong Wen's Top 100 Albums
sorted by plays per track (PPT)
accurate to 3:00 AM, Tuesday, 13 May 2007

Here's another album chart, seven months after the last one! This one works the same way, ranking according to PPT. The first number is the adjustment per album since October. A number in red means it's fallen that many ranks. A number in green means it's risen that many ranks. Zeroes in black mean no change since October. Zeroes in blue indicate a new entry in the charts.
