My Zoo of ancient Chinese generals (animal pictures!)

So my 21 year old childhood cat passed away last year. I didn't live with her anymore, but still, I was very very sad. She was the best.

I decided, though, that it was time I got a pet. So I decided to get a fish and name it Yu Jin. This is not a water-related joke! Yu Jin and Jin Yu (goldfish) are homophones! Well, they weren't at the time of the Three Kingdoms but that doesn't matter.
I tried to find a gold one, but I couldn't, but he needed to have at least a little gold on him, and at least I was able to do that:
Image

He's beautiful and I love him. He's a jerk. He's also extraordinarily lazy.

Image

Instead of swimming, he lets the filter inlet suck him in a little and just keep him in place.

Now you may be asking yourself about that poor snail trapped in there with Yu Jin. That's Zhu Ling, the Golden Mystery Snail.
Image

I always felt bad for Zhu Ling in history, because he seemed to be a really capable general but still the target of Cao Cao's ire. But now I understand why Cao Cao was so annoyed by him:

Image

Golden Mystery snails are supposed to eat dead plant matter, of which there's plenty. But no, not Zhu Ling. He ended up eating ALL of my LIVE plants from the top down. They didn't die, so they're growing back, but . . . I understand Cao Cao.

But wait, there's more!

Now for the past 15 years or so I've known that if I were to get a cat, I would name him after Zhang He. So I did.

Image

This is Junyi. I got him just before Christmas. Kept seeing him on the LA Animal Services website and thought I ought to just go take a look at him, planned to adopt after the New Year . . . but of course, I got him that day.

He's the sweetest boy ever. Nine months old:

But, much like the real general, he's pretty smart.

He got into the treats.

I went from having 0 animals to 3 in the course of like three months. No regrets.

I approve!

We need close-ups of Junyi's name tag.

And the coolest part, on the other side,

He's going to get a new even cooler name tag soon. To swap out. You know, can't wear the same thing every day.

I love the theme of naming animals after 3K generals! the closest I've ever got to that was naming Pokemon after them...

Zhang He is beautiful!

This is how Junyi sleeps, by the way:

(Ignore the messy room, I'm cleaning)

Truly an officer and a gentleman.

How does he not wake up with a horrible crick in the neck and massive back pain?

...oh I get it, he's young. I bet when I was his age I could do that too without back and neck pain. *laments*

I am sad to announce that after less than a year, Zhu Ling has died. :(

Apparently snails don't live very long. I don't know if I want to get another one if they're just going to die in a year or less.

Long Live Zhu Ling!

Sorry to hear that CaTiRe! :( My sister stopped getting hamsters because she didn't like them dying every couple of years!

I regret to inform you all of the death of Yu Jin the Jin Yu. I took really good care of him but it's been extremely hot recently and apparently he was getting old. I was told they lived longer than they actually do. He was a good fish! :(

I made him a stele:
