Comments: For those that don't know, TRU is the group that was comprised of Master P, and his two brothers (the superior rapper and currently incarcerated) C-Murder, and (lesser rapper...) Silkk the Shocker. It's from 1996, and was by far the best album ever produced under the No Limit label, as well as one of the first. Mystikal appears on the track, and it's just classic down south dirty rap music. Not much more to be said other than it brings me back. It isn't the best song on the double LP, but is probably the most well known.

Comments: I stumbled upon Johnathan Rice almost entirely by accident. He was originally recommended to me on Amazon, but I found his album, Trouble is Real, in a closing down sale for just 1.99, and it's one of the best records I've ever heard. It's almost as if Johnathan Rice's switches through a range of different musical genres within the album - occasionally rock, folk and blues - and he does each so well. So Sweet is one of my favourite tracks from the album. It's very catchy, quite dark, and structured brilliantly, and I'd recommend anyone listen to it.

This thread is interesting because I generally have whole albums that I'm listening to rather than particular tracks, so I'll pick a few tracks from thealbums I've been spinning lately.

Song: In The Court of the Crimson King

Comment: Although the 1969 version of this band - the original line-up - is far from being my favorite, three of the 5 tracks click on a near-perfect level and this is probably my favorite of the three. The lyrics sound daft at first but are in fact highly allegorical, weaving a tale of how persons in authority use artifice and deception to maintain power. Ian McDonald's flute solo at the first break is excellent, and at the second break, when the song appears to be over, McDonald and Michael Giles' improvised Mellotron/euphonium duet kicks the song back up again with a rousing reprisal of the main theme. I'm currently listening to this both on the original album and also on the 4-disc live Epitaph set.

Comments: While the gradual build-and-release effect found on the studio version of this track is highly affecting, the fact is that it lacks the ferocious power given form in concert. From the stomping intro, with its chant of Ba-Dee-Da-Dow, Ba-diddie-dow, Ba-da-da-dow-Ba-doo-doo (predating Kid Rock by about 25 years), to the almost demonic fury of Robert Fripp's guitar in the middle section and John Wetton's speaker-wrecking bass play, to the final verse with David Cross' screaming violin, this is rock music at its finest.


Song: Lady of the Dancing Water/Cadence and Cascade

Rating: 8/10
Comment: Though really two songs this is included as one because the band do not stop, Robert Fripp effortlessly transforming the end of the first into a bridge section and then coming out the other end with the next song's lead lines. This version of the band was maligned for a long time and these live albums have helped to rehabilitate their image as a truly worthy King Crimson incarnation. Boz Burrell - who just recently passed away, R.I.P. - gives them a bluesy tone not found on the folkier originals, and Mel Collins' flue work is beyond compare. The only reason it gets 8/10 and not higher is because Peter Sinfield is messing around on the VCS3 and distorting words and instruments in a very non-listener-friendly way.
