For the first new Doctor Who episode, critics seem to love it, I was more I had a nice time and there were more positives then negatives. The adventure, usually a weak point, was good with a well done baddie and those moments of the chase and the battle (as it were) clicked so that was very encouraging. It's build up of the new cast members went well, deft touch with the big change rather then hammer at it but there are times where the dialogue felt forced, I'm hoping that can relax now.

The new Doctor... also mixed. When being a teacher or the sense of morality, she shone and Whittaker made that Doctor part very much her own, when facing the baddie she had good exchanges, when left alone she showed a decent comic touch. When with the future companions? Again that issue of things sometimes feeling forced but also a sense that she was trying (and I get why) to be a bit too much like Capaldi and others, trying so hard to be energetic and it felt wrong, it lacked the sizzle and rhythm. I'm hoping that as her character gets used to the new body, they will let Whittaker be Whittaker

Still not a fan of the new costume, Capaldi's old one actually looked better on her. THis just feels like trying too hard to be eccentric. Full credit for how they used the location of the adventure however

-Grace was my favourite character, would have enjoyed her and husband going on adventures as they balanced each other well

-Really glad Ryan didn't suddenly become inspired to being suddenly able to ride that bike when his body simply can't. As someone with a smaller degree in this sort of problem, would have felt insulting. I'm also hoping they address Graham's snapping about it (without making him the baddie, I do get why people can snap) rather then ignore it

Love the title sequence, them tune feels underpowered. Didn't sink into the episode but was a decent adventure and Whitakker seemed more relaxed, more her doctor and I liked what I saw for the most part, saw good fleshing out of group dynamics though only Ryan really felt progressed as a companion.

-I liked the big cloth group attack and when doctor read out the writing

-Tardis feels like they are trying to do too much, was not a fan

-Call of Duty mode!

So season finished, as I understand it the numbers have been very good and certainly been some radical changes by Chibnal, new writers, new monsters (none had Weeping Angel impact, a few that could be run with in future), a return to "use episodes to go into historic time periods for a lesson"
we had Rosa Parks and Partition
, new music, a female doctor... it has been fine. I don't think those who left the show have missed much, it hasn't been a bad one but bar "the new doctor", not sure it will be remembered.

They handled the change of gender well, not overdoing it, a few jokes including that some her past will shock guest characters due to her remembering she is a man or simply not being a man, one episode where "yep being a female will lead to issues" (I don't expect them to stick with that), trying to reassure with tone. Whittaker has been a likeable, warm presence, bits of humour, can stand up for herself but as yet, I'm not sure I have a strong sense of this Doctor's personality. This is not to do with actress but a wider problem with the writing.

Four new characters was asking a lot for a show that sometimes needs a second season to fill in a character when there are multiple new ones. Next season needs to flesh out all four. The cast do a good job, they are likeable figures who bounce off each other, one or two dynamics have emerged but as characters, not yet. Yasmin in particular (I hate the nicname "Yas") is one that feels squeezed out at times while they lean onto an aspect of Ryan a little too heavily at times.

The adventures? They have a good mix, generally light, some fun ones the Ghost Monument or Arachnids like host Monument and very few are boring but there isn't one I would put as a memorable one. Aspects are like one historical figure
King James of England and Scotland (Alan Cumming) is portrayed with an excellent performance and a complex figure, some nice delves into his history though I think blaming him for Mother's death is a bit odd
or one half of "It Takes You Away"
nice and scary with the unseen monster and the passages with Ribbons being an intresting creepy fellow, then they do something else
shine but not the episodes or a "that's this Doctor's shining moment". It's monsters are often just "we need a monster" forgettable, messaging is kept easy enough for kids so can be a little on nose though Rosa also showed how effective it can be when done right, stories have a habit of throwing something in last minute or wandering onto what feels like it should be a complete different story so wasting more then one idea. If writers can sometimes slim down the side cast and concentrate on one or two key ideas, it would help.

Oh and not going in period costumes, when Legends of Tomorrow does, just feels a tad annoying though I imagine it saves money and I know they have IC justification but still, would be nice.
