This thread is simple, every once in a while I will post a law and we can all debate our feelings about it. I will be starting off with age requirements; there are plenty to choose from. For example, the legal ago for, sex, driving, drinking, going to jail, to be married.

So to start with, here is the first law of debate.

The legal drinking age: 21 (In the United States)

I think drinking at 21 is probably right. However many people start drinking before that age. People think that you're just "mature" enough at age 21 or 18 but however some people may be mature enough a little earlier or later.

I would agree with a law saying that you can drink at 18, but you can't buy alcohol until you are 21. 18 year olds in America don't get as many rights as the adults 20 years ago. In a lot of places pornography is denied to 18 year olds and you can't get into a lot of casinos if you are under the drinking age. Pretty much all you can do is smoke, fight, and vote, but how many 18 year olds actually vote?

I personally think that the lega drinking age should be 18. I don't see why you are mature enough to be charged as an adult in court, but not drink.

I'm not sure how Europeans handle advertising, but I think that the banning of alcohol ads (for say, 10 years) and eliminating a legal age of drinking would probably be better than lowering it to 18. However, there's the cultural roadblock of it still being "cool" to drink.

As it is, I'd stick with 21, because most 18 year olds are just starting college and are learning to become adults and set their priorities, and alcohol being "suddenly legal" to them at that age I think would detract from the changes that occur at this time. (By suddenly legal, I mean in the way that at 16, it's "suddenly legal" to drive a car -- not as in the age limit suddenly being lowered on you when you were expecting to wait a few years.) At 21, you've been in college a while (or have a job), and you've learned at least somewhat how to be an adult enough to add on the responsibilities of drinking.

I agree with the 21 age limit, many people before then are simply unprepaated to handle drinking alcohol both physically and mentally. Now 21 isn't always the magic number but overall I think it's the best age.

Our legal age for alcohol is indeed 18 :D

But since individual mature differently, it's hard to set an age line for majority, it's funny to think how I will be expected as an responsible adult in just two months time

I started drinking at 15, i think the age limit at 21 is OTT, it's unnecessary. I think i was mature enough to drink then. Its not the age, its the person, some people will become drunks etc whatever their age of starting.

The age limit for Singapore is 18. You can be 81 and still break stupid rules because you are drunk. To me, it does not make a difference if you drink at 21 or 18. As a matter of fact, by setting it at 21, its is inducing a lot of people to break the law. Eg, during Prohibition, while the industrial manufacturing and selling of alcohol is prohibited, the consumption was not. People literally approve of prohibitionist yet drink.

The bottomline is therefore, many will get their means to drink if they want to. Law or no law, there will be people drinking below their age limit.

There will always be those who drink when they want to, even if "the law" says so. Back in the days when the US tried prohibition, gangsters would cease the opportunity and get liquor for those in need of a drink.

Back on the subject, I suppose the "law" helps the younger generation to take care of their health by not make drinking as a habit. Though the authority of the law is questionable, is does help. I agree to the drinking age of 21.
