Gun Control

Unread postby Jonathan » Thu Nov 07, 2002 5:37 pm

Gun control has become a big deal in the United States as of late, especially after a series of school shootings and street violence. Civil rights movements and protests have become common, and people have taken turns marking the NRA as evil.

In the case of school shootings the argument is on many occasions along these lines. A child who plays violent video games (Mortal Combat, Doom) listens to “negative” music (Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails), and who is bullied, is more inclined to become a child ready to kill.

I for one vaguely understand this.

Here is a quote to explain how I feel about gun control.

"The defense of one's self, justly called the primary law of nature, is not, nor can it be abrogated by any regulation of municipal law."

What are your thoughts?

I dont think we really have the need for guns at all. But I'm sure there are hunters out there that have legitimate use for a hunting rifle.

But what in the heck does anyone need to have access to any type of submachine gun for?

Is that really too much to ask? If there is no legitimate civilian use for a type of weapon, then they should be outlawed. How can CA make nunchucks illegal...two little sticks connected with a chain ie. Bruce Lee, but allow guns?

Because Nunchucks weren't covered in the Bill of Rights or whatever it is...

stupid guns...

You think the D.C. Snipers and Columbine would serve as an example of the antiquity of that right, but I guess some people just never learn.

There's no way to get rid of guns it's imposible. Most people have them for so called "self-defence".Everyday I hear more of little kids getting shot because they're playing with guns and thinking it's not loaded. You'd figure all the school shootings and the Sniper shootings would slap people in the face and say "Hey dumba** lock up your gun and don't let them get the keys." Apparently scociety is to stupid to realize that.

Until the US Constitution is changed, Americans will always demand the right to bear arms.

HOWEVER......what kind of arms that are available to the the general population should be the question.

Submachine guns? Shotgun? Sniper rifles? Why would any normal everyday person have any use for these type of weapons?

Does the US constitution specify that its citizen should have "the right to bare arm"?

Anyhow, I don't think a document that was written morethan 200 years a go had any relevant in today society. About two 2 weeks ago some craze Chinese guy bring a few hand guns into his university and shoot dead 2 of his classmate (who also was chinese) and wounded 5 other person. The stupid thing is that guy got gun permits for 7 hand guns. After that incident, the all the government did was to discuss about gun restriction. I don't think anything would change...

I think that we should have the right to bear arms. My stance on this is like my stance on many other similar subjects: "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." What I mean by that is, if a person goes crazy and has a gun, he'll probably shoot someone, right? But if he doesn't have access to a gun, he'll find some other way to do his violent act...ergo it's not the guns that need restricting.

I agree with you on that one. However, guns are more destructive than say, a sword or something. You can kill many people with a loaded automatic assault gun without any training. And there's little others can do to protect themselves. If, on the other hand, only swords and sticks are available, then it takes quite a while for him to kill just one person, and people can at least manage to deter him, whether it be martial arts or just pepper spray.

My response to the "Guns don't kill people, people kill people" statement, is that anything can be used in place of the word "guns." So would the statement "Drugs don't kill people, people who use drungs kill themselves" persuade people that drugs should be made legal?

Let's face it, guns were invented to harm living things, meaning other people in war or animals in hunting. Hunting is okay to me as long as it is for food. If you want to have fun with guns, play Counter-Strike or something. Guns should not only be controlled, I think it should be taken off the streets totally.

Are the British really going to invade America again? Are the Native Americans going to skin our families? NO! The right to bear arms is no longer relevant in society today. It is evolution when useless things are discarded...it happens in nature, so shouldn't that same principle be utilized in modern society? Of course my analogy isn't perfect, but certain universal truths can be applied. Okay, I digress...

I really don't understand why there are people who stand up for guns. They claim it is their right, and I agree that as of now it is, but do they really need it? Do they really feel THAT much safer with a piece of metal in their drawer? Those who overdramatize their right to bear arms are like those who claim they watch pornography because they think it's an artform... My response to that is "Shaddap!"
