Crazy Tiger?

Unread postby Beautiful_Beard » Fri Dec 26, 2003 3:24 am

My mind has been poisoned by too many Koei games. :?
What was Xu Zhu's actual nickname? Crazy Tiger, Mad Tiger, Tiger Butcher, Sleeping Tiger, Humping Tiger, whatever.... did Xu Zhu have a tiger related nickname? And if so, what was it?

His nickname is Hu3 Chi1 虎痴, so maybe Crazy Tiger or Passionate Tiger or something of that sort is correct I think.

Quotes from SGYY.....

With a flourish of his whip, he said, "Where is the noble 'Marquis Tiger' that I hear you have in your camp?"

At this Xu Chu lifted his sword and roared, "I am Xu Chu of Qiao!"

Han Sui replied, "I have heard that Cao Cao had a body guard of the bravest and strongest soldiers under the command of Dian Wei and Xu Chu. They are called the Tiger Guard. Now as Dian Wei is dead, the man you saw must have been Xu Chu. He is both brave and powerful and goes by the name of Tiger Lust. You will do well to avoid him."

Hm, it seems that he was called both of these...

Hmm... so does it mean he's crazy like tigers or crazy about tigers?

Maybe there's some implication that Xu Chu fought like a wild tiger, powerful and unrestrained.

If there's anyone crazy about tigers, it's Sun Quan!

But shouldn't then the Chi ("crazy") come before the Hu ("tiger") (I thought that adjectives that modify a noun always come before?)?

True... Sun Quan was crazy about tigers... he even used the word "tiger" in the style names of two of his daughters....

Hu Chi - tiger crazy?
Chi Hu - crazy tiger

you must be Chinese, I encouorage you to write down Chi Hu, the meaning of "crazy like tiger" will be translated to "idiot-tiger"

From Xu Chu's SGZ biography:
军中以褚力如虎而痴,故号曰虎痴;是以超问虎侯,至今天下称焉,皆谓其姓名也。

A very rough translation:
"Within the military ranks, the soldiers viewed Xu Chu as having the strength of a tiger and was a zealous fighter (?) hence he was nicknamed Hu Chi. Ma Chao asked for the "Tiger Marquis" hence Xu Chu was also known as that ever since."
