If cao had gotten to him first he would have killed used him for ransom, but liu wouldnt go back. Its not like he didnt want to he just coulnt risk losimg all the men it would take to retrieve shan

cao is very intelligent, but liu is equaly intelligent in that he can see wasting that many lives for an infant is nonsense. why do you think zhou yun had to go back alone.

Liu Bei would definitely not have gone back for Liu Shan. His forces were already in disarray and his position was too tenuous to risk for the sake of an infant. After Cao realised that ransom would not be forthcoming, he would either have killed Liu Shan, exiled him, or raised him in Wei. I don't think that the Man was cruel enough to kill the child of a respected enemy.

The eldest son of your enemy is worth many legions of men. Should Liu Bei establish a kingdom, the day he dies is the day Liu Shan's value sky rockets as you create a succession crisis to undermine Shu-Han, this kind of tactic was oft used during the spring & autumn & warring states period. The potential for mischief is is endless!

Cao Cao will most definitely tried to use Liu Chan as a hostage only to find Liu Bei will not relent to any of his wishes... so Cao Cao will asuredly kill him since he find Chan's useless... But maybe Cao will use him like Zhilong stated...

Slight difference

Cao Cao had plenty of sons who were alive and one was soon to be an adult. Liu Bei had no other sons at the time and there is no guarantee that he will have another

you r quite right Dong :D

Liu Bei's future still unsure too (maybe defeated and killed by Cao Cao) that's why his heir is very important.

An heir is only really important to Liu Bei in this context if he has something to pass on. At this point he has pretty much nothing in terms of a base, having an heir won't change this. Liu Bei being alive has the potential to change this, thus his life is much more important than that of his son.
