Zhou Yu was an awesome general but the novel changed his function completely. He went from being Sun Ce's must trusted officer who was trusted with guarding borders to his strategist. In all fairness Zhou Yu still comes across as talented, even if he is a jealous jerk in the novel. Lu Fan is the officer who really gets shafted as he was Sun Ce's actual strategist!

(and you're talking about Liang's role in Chibi, right?)

More the whole Chi Bi to Zhou Yu's death. In the novel, Zhuge Liang is a driving force, forges the alliances, convinces everyone to fight, is at Chi Bi and is the big figure as Shu gains land and manipulates events in Jing. Historical Zhuge Liang suggests alliance to Liu Bei, is envoy to Wu, alliance agreed after one mishap and then does civil work in Jing till a few years after Zhou Yu's death.
“You, are a rebellious son who abandoned his father. You are a cruel brigand who murdered his lord. How can Heaven and Earth put up with you for long? And unless you die soon, how can you face the sight of men?”

I think the novel's portrayal of Liang's role in Chibi is well overdone. I wasn't convinced from the start. He made it sound like Liang did all the thinking. I think the 2010 series might've tried to portray a more balanced picture. But the original 1994 series annoyed me in a way cause of how close it stuck to the novel thus biased.

Lu Fan is shafted bad in the RTK games too! Well in any case the novel was very dismissive of Wu just, like in general.
