What were battles like

Hey!

So as some of you know I am doing this ROTK mod for Shogun2.

And I am currently building a few new maps.
In terms of siege, what were the battles like back then?

A reoccurring theme of S2 is just a elevated circular encampment that the enemy comes, runs into archer fire, climbs the walls, and tries to take the keep. Strong towns, add more levels.


First,
This gets kind of boring
Second,
I dont think most battles went down like this in the three kingdoms era
Third,
Weren't towns more ground level and all the buildings inside?

What did towns look like? How were the battle fought?

Mainly I think Ill just add more detail and make it look like theres economy buildings about for lvl 2 and 3, more "city-like"


Any insight into this could help me design better maps.
