Well for yI Ling Liu being had declared himself emperor and he wanted vengeance for Guan and jing province sof I feel like he needed to lead the army to showcase the emperors army of justice. Having someone else lead the troops might have taken away from a victory if one was achieved. Also Liu bei had years of experience leading armies so he probably felt like he needed to do the leading himself. Cao caos situation is a bit different I believe because cao cao had much more territory so there was potential to attack or be attacked in many more directions, so cao cao had to travel much further distances between his territories, and that might explain why some times cao didn't lead the troops himself
