They need a Wu tv series

Unread postby Elskidor » Fri Mar 13, 2015 4:49 pm

There are so many tv shows and films that concern Wei and Shu, but not nearly enough of Wu. Even the latest Three Kingdoms series cuts Wu's scenting more than the others. Personally, I'd love a show that is based around Sun Jian, Sun Ce and ends with Sun Quan's rise.

Three Kingdoms, sadly, did not focus much on the Wu empire until Red Cliffs. After Yiling they vanish as well.

I'd like a well made series about Sun Jian to Sun Ce to Zhou Yu/Sun Quan/Red Cliffs. The pre-Sun Quan years.

Welcome to the forum Elskidor

The problem for Wu is that, culturally, it doesn't have the same draw as Wei, who might be baddies culturally but have figures like Cao Cao and Sima Yi, or the popular Shu kingdom. This is for a variety of reasons, including later dynasties issues of legitimacy and the novel changing it so Shu was Wei's main rival, but Wu becomes the third wheel. A Wu story would be intresting but if you want to sell, I imagine Wei and Shu are better choices.

I thought that Sun Ce and Zhou Yu's tale was popular in Chinese Opera? Surely something dramatic about their love with the Qiao's is a possibility?

I'd prefer a series on their love for each other :D

More seriously, that'd be nice to see.

Sun Jian, a helpless naive that fight everywhere trying to prove his loyalty before realizing everybody are corrupt.
Sun Ce, an extremely friendly and lively person who enjoy life to the fullest.
Zhou Yu, a humble and wise person who could serve as a voice of reason to Sun Ce.
Qiao sisters, the prettiest of their time, with blank slate personality that could be filled with any purpose (serious or funny).
Sun Xang Xiang, a tomboy. So much possibility.
Lu Meng, a warrior turned a scholar. Again, so much possibility.
Gan Ning, because everybody love pirates.
Lu Xun, a loyal hero. Celebrated at his youth, shunned at his old age by the same master. Tragic-oriented story potential there.
Zhuge Ke, an arrogant brilliant. Shaken with stone cold reality later on, that he may not be as good as he thought he is.
Lu Kang, a tragic hero, was watching helplessly as his Kingdom crumbles. A lot of possibilities, as the last character the saga.

TBH honest, Wu has so much colorful character that provides many room for griping storytelling. In this aspect, they're not that far behind Shu. Hate to admit it, so far I find that Wei has the least interesting/provocative characters; probably because most of them was too resourceful to develop kinks/pet peeve.

You forgot Ling Tong and Lu Su.

And I'd rather they stray away from their DW kind of personas and also focus more on the early founding days of Wu up until Chibi.

Yeah lets see Gan Ning actually portrayed at the cruel, nasty man he was in history. If we want the valorous pirate then there is Zhao Tai.

It will be no surprise to anyone that I'd love to see a Sun Ce focused drama.

Zhou Tai I think? I don't know Wu history well at all.

I'd love that.

When I wrote 'Zhao Tai' I thought it looked wrong.

So I couldn't actually find a reference in the SGZ that says he was a pirate but it is in the SGYY - his biography here says that:

Though initially starting off his career as a bandit of Jiujiang commandery, Zhou Tai later joined with another pirate and bandit named Jiang Qin and gathered a band of followers with the goal of joining Sun Ce.

That doesn't seem to fit in with actual history though so must be taken with a huge pinch of salt. Can still make for a fun sub-plot in a TV series though.
