Not so much afraid of Gan Ning himself but afraid of the situation if he tried to take on Gan Ning. Better general is Gan Ning

Shouldn't there be four options?

At the time, Guan Yu's troop strength was weak and he hadn't had time to build it yet. Liu Bei withdrew most of his troops from Jing during his prolonged attack on Yi and hence Guan Yu was left with a very small force. Gan Ning was known as a competent general and Guan Yu was aware of this fact and so he was just being cautious. Gan Ning was certainly not a better general than Guan Yu.

Like Dong Zhou said, shouldn't there be 4 options here?

Guan Yu was not scared of Gan Ning he probably retreated because of the situation, but i wouldn't say he was a better general than Gan Ning.

Didn't Guan Yu outnumber Gan Ning in this incident? Im not to sure but didn't this also happen on water? if so Guan Yu was right to retreat being that Gan Ning was a very talented naval officer.

Yes I agreed that Guan Yu didn't afraid of Gan Ning, but he is use his mind too when see the situation seem bad to him.
But who is the better general, in naval battle I says Gan Ning, but in land battle of course Guan Yun Chang..both have their exceptional skill.. :D

Guan Yu affraid?????

never!! he5 :D

well there is a little different between clever and coward same as brave and foolish. but Guan Yu is the clever and brave one...hehehe

hmmm the one who affraid of Gan Ning is Huang Zu...if i'm not mistaken. well logically, who's not affraid with someone who like murdering people? (Gan Ning, historically like killing people in his house but an acceptional commander in battlefield...strange isn't it?? :?: )

There is an argument for saying Gan Ning was a better general than Guan Yu, though i certainly wouldn't agree with it. Guan Yu's might was feared and respected by the other kingdoms, there is no proof that Gan Ning's was. Liu Bei left Guan Yu with a very small force when he invaded Yi and hence for Guan Yu to build his forces to a degree that both Sun Quan and Cao Cao were threatened was very impressive.

To say that Sun Quan's skills as a general were better than Guan Yu's is completely unrealistic. Historically, Sun Quan personally had very few victories to his name, he commited numerous invasions and most of them were failures. Most of Wu's military achievements were because of Sun Quan's great generals like Lu Meng. Sun Quan's skill was in recruiting talent and politics, he was not a good military commander. This is not just my opinion, i read it in the 'Generals of the South', this is the work compiled by Rafe de Crespigny.
