Huang Zhong and Yan Yan Underrated?

New postby Lonely_dragon on Fri Oct 26, 2007 5:46 am

Yup we all had taken about famous generals and strategists... that is why I'm interested to established this topic...

I thought that these two were underrated...

These two though old but they had distinguished services...

Huang Zhong guard Dingjun and killed Xiahou Yuan
Yan Yan held his own against Zhang Fei at Ba

and then these two succeed in defeating Zhang He at Tiandang mountain....

So I wanted you guys to pitch in what you have thought and the reasons

By fellow generals due to age? Maybe but Huang Zhong is recognised as one of Shu's best general whereas Yan Yan isn't that good. Sure he was brave, fairly strong but he needed someone to hold his hand, against Zhang Fei somebody warned him to stay and defend but after initially following it he marched out and was captured. Rest of career was doing what Huang Zhong said and surrenders

Fixed it in part, not sure what I can about those who have already voted but as it was only two, it shouldn't be too big a problem.

I think they were both, to a certain extent, under rated actually.

Maybe not by the people of their time (Liu Bei and Shu), but probably by us- we dont mention them much here, but they played major parts in some battles.

My thinking is most in line with Dong Zhou's original post. Huang Zhong was actually quite highly recognized, so I don't know how he could be considered underrated. Do you mean he was underrated in his time, or that he's underrated by people nowadays?

We don't really know much about Yan Yan as a young man, but I think he's rated pretty fairly, even now. He was a good, tough general, and he has a cool sprite in Destiny of an Emperor. ;)

a cool sprite in Destiny of an Emperor.

Well, that makes up for anything then

Yeah, Huang Zhong- I dont think he's underrated historically- he's on the same par as Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, but we so rarely talk about him now.

I think maybe because he seems so straight forward- no controversy on what he did or how good he was- we all accept as granted that he's a great general, old and strong.... maybe I think he's underrated because we dont talk about him and how great he was?

Yan Yan, We dont talk about him at all.

I think Kongy is right to a large extent though- it's not like anyone here is saying bad things about him, and historically we can say he was pretty well regarded.
