I'm going with Zhang Ni/Yi.

Guan Xing, I think he did the most for Shu, after him, Zhang Ni
It is curious that the Americans, who calculate so carefully on the possibilities of military victory, do not realize that in the process they are incurring deep psychological and political defeat.

Novelwise Guan Xing, historically Liao Hua for his efforts and advice

Liao Hua, definately, especially historically, he doesn't really feature in the novel enough.

Of course, novelwise it's Guan Xing/ Zhang Bao with their "we're the new brothers" thing.

We already have a big versus thread. Perhaps you should use that one instead.

I'd say Guan Xing was the most able, with the novel showing that Zhuge Liang himself saw Xing's potential from an early age... After him Zhang Ni, or Liao Hua - for his longevity and slow growth in influence at court rather than actual ability

I don't think Guan Xing or Zhang Bao are better, I believe they are the least when it comes to military experience other than Gao Xiang. Guan Xing died of illness, what is that about? He's body is so weak that he died early. Zhang Bao died during a skirmish and is one of the cause of Zhuge Liang's death. I think they just carried their father's names, I wouldn't really say that they didn't do much though since they were there during the northern campaigns.

I vote for Liao Hua over Zhang Ni since he has over come more vicious trials than Zhang Ni but both of their achievements are better I would even say aggrandized during and before the three kingdoms era.

How does death by an unknown illness (could be cancer, some sort of epidemic, could be anything) mean he had a weak body?
