Dian Wei: Origination of his style, Ziman?

Dian Wei: Origination of his style, Ziman?

New postby Kong Wen on Thu Feb 10, 2005 4:32 am

Hey, I have a question. Where did Dian Wei's style name come from? It's not in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and as far as I know, it's not in SGZ either. So how did he get tagged with Ziman?

I’ve been trying to remember myself. I know I have seen it in its original source, and I know Jonathan Wu knows where it is too. But for the time being, that’s all I know myself…

So far as I know there's no mention of Dian Wei's style, but there is a line in Dian Wei's biography that says "拜子满为郎中"(pingyin: bai4 zi3 man3 wei2 lang2 zhong1), meaning "[Cao Cao] gave [Dian Wei's] son Man the post of Langzhong." I'm not sure if that's because somebody misread this and thought ziman was Dian Wei's style or not.

LOL! You're a genius, 7@1. I had never thought of that.

But it's a different Man2 that is his style, isn't it?

And doesn't Koei's RoTK recognize a Dian Man, son of Dian Wei? (Pretty crappy leadership stats... I think he was 70 WAR 55 LEA in RTK9? Gosh, it's been so long since I played that game...)

Hehe....either that, or Dian Wei got a style name from Yoshikawa Eiji's retelling of the ROTK tale in Japanese, which might be more likely seeing Dian Wei does have a style in ROTK games. (I don't know much about this, read about its existence from the transcript of a talk between Jin Yong and Ikeda Daisaku.)

Haha… this could be interesting. I think I’ll write Jonathan Wu.
It is starting to sound more and more like it might have been born of some confusion some time ago—maybe. I did a search on the Internet, but pretty much all I found was third party biographies which used information on KMA as a source.

I’ve been looking for the conversation above for a little while now, and I happened to stumble across it while searching for some information on Lady Sun’s various names in the forum’s older posts. I split it from the original topic so it won’t be hard to find again in the future (people still ask about this from time to time). I’m posting in it now, though, out of curiosity: I wonder if any of the forum’s new blood might have some insight into where the style ‘Ziman’ came from? 7@1’s Yoshikawa Eiji theory seems most likely.
