On my Own opinion Yuan Shao was Ambitious was because of his heritage. :) But in his ambition he led to his own downfall by being unheedful of good advice. This might have been caused by Yuan Shu, whether Yuan Shu was Shao's older or younger brother SHao followed in Shu's footsteps.

The land had collapsed, the one man who could keep the lords in line, He Jin, was dead. Yuan Shao had ambition and it was an ideal time. Sadly for him, he was perhaps too old and too ill when the big fight happened at Guan Du

He had power in a war torn land, he had a massive army with some well known men. I would be suprised if anyone failed to have ambition with that

As you know, Yuan Shao descended from a long line of high ranking ministers to the Imperial Court. Perhaps, because of this "lineage," Benchu felt that he deserved things that he probably couldn't have gotten. Then again, his becoming leader of the coalition against Dong Zhuo probably got to his head...

heh Liu shan inherit a Kingdom, where's his ambition?
It's the Have-nots that should habour greater ambition..

Yuan shao 's Linage dun make him any more ambitious than the average warlord , infact it's the other way around.
Compare to smaller warlords,he got more to lose over relatively little gain...

Probaly why he's overly cautious and hesistant in many cases...

He was ambitious for the same reason everyone else was. Being high born just helps a lot.

Nearly every warlord had ambitions to attain more power. Yuan Shao may have appeared more ambitious because he was lucky enough to inherit respect and loyalty through lineage and hence was able to amass great power. Yuan Shao was just as ambitious as the likes of Cao Cao, however, he lacked the cunning to fulfill his wishes.

Yes. Due to the fact that Dong Zhuo took out Shao's royal bloodline just exemplified his craving for ambition. It was sad because even after his death when he left his domains to third son Yuan Shang, Cao Cao managed to play them against each other and eventually destroyed the Yuans and conquered the north.

Yuan Shao had as good a claim to "aiding" the throne as any other, except Liu Bei, but the whole era is based on the being in the right place at the right time, and Yuan Shao take his chances.

Besides being ambitious he had many faliures to credit his name. When He Jin was assasinated Yuan Shao was He Jin's Escort. When The Alliance fought Dong Zhuo Yuan Shao failed to Be victorious. When he fought Gongsun Zan he only Suceeded because of his large army. And a Bai Ma Guan Yu cut Down both his highest officers Wen Chou and Yan Liang. These string of defeats may have pushed him harder to try to be victorious. :D
