Gan Ning

New postby CaTigeReptile on Fri Aug 30, 2002 6:43 pm

Sha Mo Ke didn't really kill him. He died of illness. He never recovered to get shot. He's really famous for his 100 horsemen - it was a bold raid, and he was able to influence Sun Quan to let him do it, and he was able to influence his 100 horsemen to do it. They dressed themselves in pigeon feathers. He was born a pirate, and while he was a pirate, he was very feared and known as the Pirate of the Silken Sails, well, because he stole enough to get silk sails. . . He was quite an interesting character.

Gan Ning, always like the guys, in DW3 he had the coolest sword and tattoos...I wish there be a time machine so we can go back and see how these people actually were. 8-)

Gan Ning is my favorite RTK character, obviously!

To call him a mere pirate would be like calling Liu Bei a mere shoe salesman, only worse since Gan Ning is a good character. The 100 man thing was true, he wasn't killed by Shamo Ke, and it is rumored that the only reason Guan Yu didn't attack Wu in all-out warfare was because Gan Ning had control of the navy in that area.

Yup! In SGZ it is written that Guan Yu had a whole bunch of guys and they were about to ford the Yangtze one night in order to attack Lu Su and company. Gan Ning took 1300 men with him to go towards the ford, and when Guan Yu heard of his coming, he gave up his plans and made camp by the river instead. :D

I do have one little question about Gan Ning, and yes, it's a stupid videogame related one.. but did he really wear the bells Dynasty Warriors III gives him? They call him "Gan Ning of the Bells", with the little bells at his belt giving away his presence, making enemies quiver in fear before even seeing him with knowledge that he's coming.. is that real, or made up?

The bells are real :nods: . He used to terrorize the neighbourhood, and people could tell he was coming by the sound of his bells.

Dunno if he kept them after he had an official position, though.

Question: how did Gan Ning died?
So in the novel he was killed by Sha Mo Ke (actually can someone point me to the chapter in the book where this happens? I can't remember...). However, in SGZ, it simply said "When Gan Ning died, Sun Quan grieved greatly for him", and wasn't explicit about how he died? Does anyone know what happened? Did he really die at the Xiaoyao Fords when fighting against Zhang Liao?

I believe he died of illness.

Using the on-line novel, the Chapter is 83, paragraph 28.
