SGYY Events? “In a Plum Garden, Cao Cao Discusses Heroes”

Unread postby James » Thu Aug 19, 2004 11:17 pm

I had a random but rather fun little idea for KMA earlier today while I was taking a break from some work, and decided to go right on through with it using one of my favorite events in Sanguo yanyi.

Here’s a sample of the idea:

Romance of the Three Kingdoms Event:
“In a Plum Garden, Cao Cao Discusses Heroes”

I’m interested to hear what everyone things. Should I (or other people) make more of these for everyone to enjoy? Basically, each would be a introduction leading up to a famous novel event, followed by the event itself (which can either come from or be written out by the event description author), concluding with another summary of how things wound up as a result. It would be very easy for other people to write these for inclusion at KMA as well.

Feedback is welcome on both the sample event, and the idea in general. :)

THis is a great idea, It would be great for small reference points throught debating. INstead of going to the site, and finding it you could justgo to the "events" post and dig it up. I think that's a wonderful idea James. Rock on!

I like the idea - we have a lot of knowledgable and well-versed members here at SoSZ and I think it would be something we could enjoy sharing. As for your piece, James, the idea of sitting in the rain chatting with Cao Cao is always a great setup for a good story!

Not much to say except I think it's a great idea and that image of Liu Bei makes it look as if he's staining his robe (and probably the couch).

Oh yes, certainly James. Here's some memorable events I'd like to see:

* Oath of the 3 brothers
* Duel between 3 brothers vs Lu Bu
* The "chaining-trick" (beautiful-woman ruse)
* Lu Bu's betrayal
* Death of Sun Jian
* Duel of Taishi Ci vs Sun Ce
* Lu Bu's final moments
* Dian Wei's final moments
* Guan Yu's surrender to Cao Cao
* Burning Wu Chao Depot
* Three brothers rejoined again.
* Liu Bei meeting with Sima Hui
* Liu Bei meeting ZGL 3 times
* ZGL meets Wu scholars
* Cao Cao's escape in Hua Rong's valley
* ZGL weeps for Zhou Yu
* Guan Yu captures Huang Zhong
* ZGL weeps for Ma Su

A lot... :)

It is a good idea and will be a good reference (especially for RTK players who want to know more about the triggered events but who are too lazy to read the novel). However, how will it be different than, say, pointing them to a section of the novel online?

Alright, I hate to be a stick in the mud here, but I thought it would be important to express a dissenting opinion. My view is this: between these event descriptions, SGYY bios, and COB bios, what are we doing other than rewriting and/or copy-pasting the novel onto KMA? How is typing Chapter 21 of the novel in your own words different or more valuable than telling someone to read Chapter 21 of the novel in Luo Guanzhong's words? I do understand how it could be seen as helpful to have the novel indexed according to popular events, but I still don't see the idea as anything more than transcribing the novel or transplanting passages into their own little files.

I think it's definitely an interesting idea. I tcould be an easy-to-use refrence point for debating, and it could help people new to the three kingdoms in understanding certain events that may appear confusing in the novel, or Dynasty Warriors. While it may somewhat be rewriting, the helpfulness outweighs it.
Huang Zhong: Are you calling me old?!
Wei Yan: ...Yes.
Huang Zhong: Liu Bei! I demand you kill him!
Liu Bei: Well it's... true...

Agreed Kong,

But novels can differ from translator to translator (e.g. CHBT vs MR), we can inject historical notes for the event, add cultural / political / social context of the time to clarify situations, etc... Not only that, some events may have references or conclusions in different, non-contiguous chapters where we can handily include a hyperlink. Also, link to actor's bios (novel-wise / history-wise), etc...
