Ma Su was an excellent advasor and was well versed in military tactics. like stated before he was too inflexable and a bit full of himself. I personally don't think he should have been executed for making one mistake.

Not for a normal mistake. But this is one may have costed Shu the war. Jie Ting was the throat of Han Zhong. This mistake also costed the life of a lot of Shu warriros and a lot of suplies, so this is a lot more than a simple mistake. He could not see that the plan of Wang Ping was really good. Making a camp on the road would have stopped the Wei forces, then Zhuge could have go on with is northern campaing without the loss of a key location such as Jie Ting.

There have been many occations where that rule was suspended. If that rule was always carried out then Zhang Fei would have been executed when he let Lu Bu take Xia Pi which was much worse then what Ma Su did.
Ma Su was a very talented officer and the blame was also on Zhuge for putting him in charge instead of putting Wang Ping in charge and just selecting Ma Su to advise him.

It is good, when the enemy don't know the army is hiding in the hill.
Detach from emotions and desires; get rid of any fixations.
