I actually never quite figured out how baseball works. Some guy chucks a ball in to this other guy's face, other guy tries to ward it off with a stick, then runs like hell, then a bunch of people go look for the ball and hurl it at the running guy to stop him from running. And that's about the extent of my knowledge of baseball.

I'm looking for a 50-word-max explanation of what the game is really all about.

I only know that the baseball bat is a favourite murder weapon in teenage fictions.

I don't really appreciate baseball even though I had a few lessons during my school days. I don't understand why we have to run around in a square and if you have a class of thirty students who have no idea where to stand, things will get boring within 5 minutes.

Whereas for sports like basketball and soccer, it's pretty straightforward and you can form teams within your class in minutes and start playing competitively even though you don't study the 101 penalty rules.

Think of the pitcher as Cao Cao, determined to get rid of the viceroys of Wu (the batter), one after the other. First base is Eastern Wu, Second base is Jing, and Third base is Yi. To stop Cao Cao, you have to make sure you withstand his initial assault (hit the ball), then rally the troops at home (first base), then take it to Jing (second) and then get to Yi (third) to call for help from Shu. If you make it home alive, then you've succeeded.

Note that you can't run the bases out of order. Can't get to Yi without going through Jing first.

Being a Wuist, I find that extremely morbid. But ok. I'll accept this explanation.

Mithril! The dwarves tell no tales. But just as it was the foundation of their wealth, so also it was their destruction. They delved too greedily and too deep, and disturbed that from which they fled.

Here's a better explanation of baseball (in Wu terms  )

First base is Jing, Second base is Jiangdong, Third base is Yi, and Home is Xuchang.

The score is 0-0

Zhou Yu is the pitcher and Cao Cao is the best hitter for the visiting team. Zhuge Liang is the catcher. Knowing the tendencies of Wei, Zhuge calls for a screwball. Wu has very awesome players on the field -- Lu Meng at first base looking rather stoic, Gan Ning (in a tiny bikini *for GuoBia) at second base staring at Ling Tong at third base. Zhou Yu throws the pitch according to Zhuge Liangs plan. Cao Cao swings at lands the hit! He's runs to first while the centerfielder (guy right past second base) Huang Gai, grabs the ball and fires it to second.

Ling Tong who is posing in awesomeness yells at Gan Ning to stop staring and catch the oncoming ball. Gan Ning turns to catch Huang Gais ball and tags Cao Cao as he was trying to reach second base in a big collision. Little did everyone know, Gan Ning steps on Cao Cao's crotch as they both try to get up. Cao Cao in utter pain and despair leaves the game in forfeit.

Now that is a baseball game!

I can't believe you forgot one of the most important positions, shortstop! Obviously no one suits this vital role other than my own namesake, the suave and brilliant Lu Xun.

Also, you realize making Zhou Yu the pitcher and Zhuge Liang the catcher opens up a whole new metaphorical can of worms that the sick and twisted individuals involved in Three Kingdoms fan fiction will surely able to run away with and possibly even steal home. Think of the children, will you!
