4/13/10: Lü Bu’s Horse—the Red Hare

Unread postby James » Thu May 13, 2010 4:50 pm

Lü Bu’s famous horse, the ‘Red Hare’ (aka. Chituma) has spawned many discussions over the years. People wonder if the horse existed, where its name originated, when it died, where it came from, and who owned it. I’ve attempted to piece much of this information together for you in a new encyclopedia entry: Read about the Red Hare in the Three Kingdoms Encyclopedia.

You can also read more about the Red Hare in one of two forum discussions. If you have any additional information to share, or would like to suggest any corrections, please reply or contact me directly. I hope to write a similar entry for Liu Bei’s Dilu Horse. Enjoy!

Neat entry James. I assume that Red Hare's entry has special coding so that it is colored red? Also, does this mean that we can start adding horses like Cao Cao's horses or Dilu?

Yes, I entered some special code which specifically recognizes the Red Hare and marks it red. I added him because I'm working on a special side project which will allow searching and filtering of the novel. Character names and such are highlighted and given links, and I wanted things like the Red Hare to have an entry as well. And besides, featuring information on things like this seems like a marvelous idea!

If you would like to start entering information for other horses, or for other various entries, please go ahead. It would be nice for everyone to have this information available. The Dilu Horse is the next one that deserves recognition in the novel.

I was also thinking, as I read through the novel, about special historic mentions such as Liu Bang, Xiang Yu, Wang Mang, etc. People reading the novel will likely want to learn about them as well. Previously we've kept the encyclopedia limited specifically to Three Kingdoms people are closely related (e.g. Liu Bei's important ancestors) but perhaps we should consider expanding that blanket to include historic character which are frequently referenced and discussed in the novel?

Already started working on the Dilu horse. Will work on Cao Cao's Fergana horse next, probably.

I think that would work. It would certainly provide some more background information, not only on the backround of what happened in the annals of history, but on the background of folktales such as the Sanguo Pinghua as well.

Sounds great!

I tossed in some Chinese character notes on the other horses—I think I did it while you were editing. I hope I didn't cause a conflict in doing so killing some information you entered as you went along. :)

Stumbled across it while looking something up.

Thats a brilliant idea. I would be one of the many who would benifit from it!
