7/8/05: A month and a half of updates; now in one edition!

Unread postby James » Fri Jul 08, 2005 11:13 pm

It’s been a little while since I’ve actually posted an update, though site work has, as usual, along with the occasional updates and fixes. The primary project has been the <a href="http://kongming.net/games/">Featured Game Directory</a> and the individual game category pages (<a href="http://kongming.net/games/three_kingdoms/">Three Kingdoms</a>, <a href="http://kongming.net/games/dynasty_warriors/">Dynasty Warriors</a>, <a href="http://kongming.net/games/dynasty_tactics/">Dynasty Tactics</a>, <a href="http://kongming.net/games/three_kingdoms/">Romance of the Three Kingdoms</a>, <a href="http://kongming.net/games/kessen/">Kessen</a>, and <a href="http://kongming.net/games/other/">Other Three Kingdoms Games</a>). These pages are not <i>new</i> pages, but they <i>have</i> been fully revised. They are now generated dynamically using PHP and our game database so they always provide current information, enabling us to better focus our attention elsewhere. As I developed the code for this section all on my own, with limited freetime, it turned out to be quite a large project indeed. Either way, enjoy!

A short while ago the wonderful Lady Wu assembled <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/names/"><i>The Definitive Guide to Names and Style Names</i></a>, which is now online in the <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/">Novel and History Section</a>. If you’ve ever wondered about things like what style names are, how parents name their children, why you can’t the actual names of the era’s women, or what those strange names Emperors have are, you will absolutely love this guide. Two new <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/bios/type.php#sgyy">Sanguo yanyi biographies</a> by Sam Wrest, <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/sgyy/wuban.php">Wu Ban (Yuanxiong)</a> and <a href="http://kongming.net/novel/sgyy/guanping.php">Guan Ping</a> (a heavily requested work), are also now available for your viewing pleasure.

I’ve completely updated the <a href="http://kongming.net/dw5/dimsum_wine/">Dim Sum and Musou Wine Guide</a> for <a href="http://kongming.net/dw5/">Dynasty Warriors 5</a> and the <a href="http://kongming.net/dt2/">Dynasty Tactics 2</a> page now also features a FAQ and an excellent game map from Professor Worm (you might remember his wonderful <a href="http://kongming.net/dt/">Dynasty Tactics</a> map). The <a href="http://kongming.net/dt2/">Dynasty Tactics 2</a> page has also been converted to use the game database, meaning pretty much everything but the <a href="http://kongming.net/products/">Product Purchase Page</a> on the site is now using it.

Koei has plans for portable Dynasty Warriors titles on the Gameboy DS and the Gameboy Advance, and has also released Dynasty Warriors 4 for Windows. Also, a version of <a href="http://kongming.net/5/">Romance of the Three Kingdoms V</a> has been released on the Sony PSP, and a version of <a href="http://kongming.net/3/">Romance of the Three Kingdoms III</a> is going to be released for the Gameboy DS. You can <a href="http://kongming.net/#gn">track release dates</a> on the home page. We certainly haven’t overlooked these games (though many probably won’t come out in English), and down the road you’ll start to see a little more attention in the games section.

Having trouble with the music page? We know and plans are in place to smooth the jagged corners. For the time being, though, you can access the content using <a href="http://mozilla.org/firefox/" target="_blank" title="External: Mozilla.org/Firefox/">Mozilla Firefox</a>. It doesn’t have many of the bugs that are in Internet Explorer.

A company filed a complaint with our host about the download section of this site, saying we are hosting such copyright works as Spiderman and PacMan, though we’ve never hosted anything of the sort on the site at any point in history. In fact, of 13 listed complaints, not a single one actually applies, or even has anything to do with the Three Kingdoms. We’re going to address this issue in due time. For the time being please use the individual feature pages for your entertainment needs.

I’ve added a new section to the <a href="http://kongming.net/links/">Links Page</a> for <a href="http://kongming.net/links/#tkud">websites that are new and under development</a>. It gives us a chance to share traffic with upcoming sites, rather than denying the listing until their page is complete with original content. Also, some old favorites on the internet have since gone away, and, remembering how often I wondered if a certain page would be back looking at a links page, I’ve added information on site closures to the section.

They don’t. It is all documented. I suspect their dumb bots just found a keyword or two and are programmed to fire off this letter in reaction, relying on scare tactics. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen something like this.

What a pain in the butt! I would like to see that list just for a good laugh. I hope that this situation can be resolved quickly. Good luck James. :)

What the hell? :? Those games listed are so random! They have no connection and are merely some of the more popular games. The bot that detected your site must have thought you were a generic ROM distributer.

ROFL! I think you are right. For every one of those games a stupid company bot probably picked up a word like "Final", "Man", "Raider", "Four", etc. and then processed an automatic complaint. All I remember that was on the Download section were the Destiny of an Emperor games and maybe some really old Romance of the Three Kingdoms games. Maybe that was not even a company bot. Just a suggestion though-If Romance of the Three Kingdoms V & III are getting new releases it might be a good idea to remove those if they were on the site. You might get more hell about them or something. Anyways thanks for the site update. You got the style name thing by Lady Wu up fast. I think I saw it a few days ago on the site homepage. Thanks again James.

I’m not worried about III or V. V isn’t even available in English, nor is the ROM, so if Koei released that it would be huge (it is also supposed to be one of the very best in the series). As far as III goes, if Koei released it on a portable game system can anyone honestly say they wouldn’t get it just because there is a ROM, and among those people, how many wouldn’t know how to get it elsewhere? I know I’d buy it in a heartbeat, and I’ve already played that game to death.

Besides, if KOEI wanted anything taken off that page, I’d be more than happy to remove it without explanation. I think having those games available only makes people happier anyway. You can’t buy them new in stores anymore in their given formats, so from a business perspective it only helps KOEI’s brand.

Lady Wu put that style name guide together a while ago. I only now got around to putting it online. It did need to go online though—it is a wonderful read. :)

Nobody’s filing suit against me, otherwise they would be in trouble. It was just a complaint forwarded to my ISP based off specific guidelines. The fact that the handling guidelines mention such things as incorrect identification of works in question only furthers the suspicion that it was forwarded by a bot.
