12/17/04: Biography Project, Reign Years, and DW5 Announced

Happy holidays to everyone! We’ll probably be enjoying family and personal time for the next week or two, but here’s an update for you: A number of external biographies have been added to the biographies home page and will appear with ‘External (Type)’ links. The type indicates what kind of biography it is (e.g. SGZ stands for Sanguozhi), and users of non-Internet Explorer browsers can also hold their cursor over the link for more information on the biography and host location. The quality of these external biographies range from fair to excellent, so don’t dismiss them all account of just one. I hope everyone enjoys this new addition.

The reign years home page has been completely rebuilt with new information.

Koei has announced a March 2005 release for Dynasty Warriors 5 in the United States, and is aiming for a late February release in Asia (see game releases at the bottom). I imagine the UK release date will be announced in the near future. More on Dynasty Warriors 5 as information develops.

James, I love you for putting the reign years in that spiffy chart. You have no idea how much time and frustration it saved me when I worked on translations.

One thing that crossed my mind---perhaps you could put in a note, pointing out that since the Chinese used a lunar calendar, their years did not start and end on the same days as the western calendars? It's a minor point, but I know I've done biographies that have years that don't match with the year given on KMA because the event in question happened in, say, the 12th month of reign year X, which could correspond to February in western calendar year Y (while most of reign year X fell within western calendar year Y-1, and is listed as being equivalent to Y-1)...

I would be happy to include a note. Is there any specific way in which I could display or describe it so people can do the calculations themselves? And if you see mistakes on KMA and you’ve got a moment, I’d love to correct them, and I doubt any other authors would take issue with that either. (Heck, I’d be happy to learn how to set up proper dates myself).

No. There are websites with algorithms that do the conversion, but they (the algorithms) are very complex, due to the nature of the lunar year (leap months every couple of years, etc). I think it's fine to keep it the way it is...

Okay, then probably it is good simply to present that warning. When you do your own biographies, what do you use to verify the reign years? Is there a site online that has a form for it, or do you have another reference? I was just trying to see if there is any way to make this information available to people…
