Title: Legend of Lu Bu Walkthrough - Early Stages

Short Title: Early Stages Walkthrough

Original Author: Lady Wu

Keywords: legend of cao cao, legend of lu bu, locc, lolb, lu bu, tnu84, legend of cao cao mod, lu bu zhuan, xycq, early stages, pre-split

Description: A walkthrough of the first 20 stages of tnu84's Legend of Lu Bu, a Legend of Cao Cao mod. This walkthrough is based on Lady Wu's English translation of the game. Story synopsis and spoilers galore.

I don't really have all these stages written up yet but I thought it'd be fun to take up space.

The Early Stages

Chapter 1

Story: You get the backstory of the decline of the Han Empire, and how Dong
Zhuo seized control of the capital. Rebellions are rising up around the
realm. Ding Yuan decides to move out to put down one of them. You meet
our hero Lu Bu, who is working for Ding Yuan; he persuades Ding Yuan to
let him go in his stead. After getting a couple Recovery Beans from Ding
Yuan, you're off!

=========================================================
Battle 1: A Rebellion
=========================================================

Player Units:

Lu Bu

Victory:

Defeat all enemies in 10 turns

Seal Conditions:

Don't let any allies die

Enemies:

Bandit x 11
Monk x 1

Allies:

Soldier x 4
Archer x 1
Cavalry x 1
Mounted Archer x 1

Allied Reinforcements:

Zang Ba (Bandit)

Events:

On enemy's second turn, enemy Fighter is defeated;
enemy bandit in middle will then be defeated by Zang Ba when he arrives

Rewards:

2000 gold

Notes:

This one is pretty simple, just like the Yellow Turban level from LoCC.
Gang up on the enemies and make sure none of your allied units dies,
since this is an easy seal to win. You might want to handle the right
couple of northern bandits first, as your allies up there tend to focus
on the left ones. Zang Ba will show up soon to the south, so he'll
help you out too with the southern ally units. I wouldn't bother
wasting any of your beans on this level, as unlike LoCC, healing items
in this mod are very important and you always want to have as many as
you can. Make sure you raid the tents and stores here for the free
beans (especially the Recovery Rice!) before your allies kill all the
enemies.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story: Dong Zhuo decides to remove the current Emperor and put the Prince of
Chenliu on the throne. In response, Cao Cao and Yuan Shao go home to
raise an army, and Ding Yuan decides to march out to attack Dong Zhuo.
Lu Bu decides to get some help from his old friend Gao Shun, and goes
to his martial arts school to find him. Gao Shun agrees, and Zang Ba
also decides to tag along for the campaign.

After watching Dong Zhuo's officers come up with some expert plans,
you'll be at the camp menu. You have 2000 gold from the last battle to
spend on beans if you want them. You may need a couple for the next
battle, but if you're confident then feel free to save your cash for
later.

Shop:

Recovery Beans................200
Recovery Rice.................800
Cure-All.....................1000

=========================================================
Battle 2: Outside Luoyang
=========================================================

Player Units:

Lu Bu
Zang Ba
Gao Shun

Victory:

Defeat Dong Zhuo in 20 turns
Ding Yuan must survive

Seal Conditions:

Trigger all duels and conversations

Enemies:

Infantry x 4
Archer x 4
Horse x 2
Horsebow x 2,
Fan Chou (Horse)
Xu Rong (Horse)
Li Su (Magician)
Dong Zhuo (Chariot)

Enemy Reinforcements:

Horsebow x 4
Horse x 1
Zhang Ji (Horse)

Allies:

Horse x 4
Infantry x 2
Archer x 2
Horsebow x 2,
Ding Yuan (Horse)

Events:

On enemy's fourth turn, enemy reinforcements will arrive from the
north

Duels:

Zang Ba vs. Fan Chou (Fan Chou retreats)
Gao Shun vs. Zhang Ji (Zhang Ji retreats)
Lu Bu vs. Xu Rong (Xu Rong retreats)
Lu Bu vs. Li Su (Li Su retreats)

Conversations:

Ding Yuan & Dong Zhuo

Reward:

3000 gold

Notes:

This is where the difficulty of the mod starts to show up. You have a
lot of allies for this mission, and all of them except for Ding Yuan
are expendable, so feel free to let them take the brunt of the enemies'
attacks while you help from the sides. Ding Yuan's unit may charge
ahead a few times, so watch out for him and make sure he doesn't get
beat up.

From where you start, you can have Lu Bu move up next to Xu Rong and
remove him right away. Zang Ba starts too far from Fan Chou to do the
same, so just do his duel on the next turn. Don't worry about Lu Bu,
he has high defense and should block a good number of hits anyway. Your
allies will help out by getting the enemies you let by. You should be
able to clear out all of the enemies outside the enemy base before the
reinforcements arrive, hopefully with only one or two allied losses.

When the reinforcements come, they should be far away enough to give
you time to clear out the rest of the southern enemies and make a
chokepoint of the southern exit. Try to set it up so that Ding Yuan
cannot move inside the enemy base; if he does, he's likely to be
quickly defeated. Let the enemies come to you and defeat them one by
one.

Once the enemies are mostly defeated, remove Li Su with Lu Bu and then
have everyone gang up on Dong Zhuo. His defense is high, so have Zang
Ba use Jeer to lower it so your allies can do some actual damage. Make
sure Ding Yuan moves next to him before he dies so you can trigger
their conversation. You should have been able to get the Seal for this
stage without too much trouble. Hopefully you didn't spend many or any
beans; make sure you get the beans from Li Su's camp.

I assume you got the seal from the last battle? This is a good battle
to use it in, but try to wait until the unit you want to use it on is
low on health, since it will restore all their HP. Gao Shun is most
likely the better candidate since he will benefit from the diagonal
attack range his second class provides.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story: Li Ru returns to Luoyang, where he persuades Dong Zhuo to try and
recruit Lu Bu. Although Li Su is unable to convince Lu Bu to defect,
Ding Yuan sees this as an opportunity to infiltrate Dong Zhuo's ranks,
and he kills himself to help Lu Bu fool Dong Zhuo. Lu Bu is forced to
defect along with Gao Shun. After some discussions with Wang Yun,
Lady Diaochan, and Hua Xiong, the alliance led by Yuan Shao and Cao Cao
attacks. You'll control Hua Xiong at the camp menu, and Hua Tuo comes to
help out. You won't be controlling Lu Bu or the others for this one, so
don't worry about them.

If you've used up a lot of beans somehow, you've got another 3000 gold
to buy some more, but it's best if you've been saving them. Not much
else to do here besides start the battle.

=========================================================
Battle 3: Sishui Pass
=========================================================

Player Units:

Hua Tuo
Hou Cheng
Song Xian
Wei Xu

Victory:

Get Hua Tuo to the escape point in 20 turns

Medal:

Trigger all duels and conversations

Enemies:

Cao Ren (Horse)
Xiahou Dun (Horse)
Xiahou Yuan (Horsebow)
Li Dian (Infantry)
Yue Jin (Infantry)
Cao Hong (Infantry)
Cao Cao (Warlord)
Zhang He (Horsebow)
Yan Liang (Horse)
Wen Chou (Horse)
Yuan Shao (Warlord)
Huang Gai (Horse)
Han Dang (Horsebow)
Cheng Pu (Horse)
Sun Jian (Warlord)
Guan Yu (Horse)
Zhang Fei (Horse)
Liu Bei (Warlord)

Allies:

Infantry x 5
Horse x 3
Archer x 3
Catapult x 1
Fan Chou (Horse)
Xu Rong (Horse)
Zhang Ji (Horse)
Li Su (Magician)

Duels:

Wei Xu vs. Wen Chou (no effect)
Song Xian vs. Xiahou Dun (no effect)
Hou Cheng vs. Xiahou Yuan (no effect)

Conversations:

Hua Tuo & Guan Yu

Special Items:

Ancestral Sword (defeat Sun Jian)

Reward:

2000 gold

Notes:

Yes, every enemy here is a named officer. Don't be too intimidated.

You will want to get back to the gate as soon as possible, so move
everyone behind your allies. Half of your allies will attack the
main coalition force while the other half will deal with the
ambushes. Your allies aren't very strong, but they should be able to
hold off the enemies long enough for you to manage to reach the gate.
If you want the seal, pray that they don't kill Guan Yu.

Once you are at the gate, if you just want to beat the level, move
Hua Tuo over to the escape point to finish. If you wanted to get the
Ancestral Sword, or you haven't triggered all the duels yet, then
put Hou Cheng and Wei Xu in the gate like so:

|
|
X
X
|
|

This way they can only be attacked by two people at close range, and
since you are in the gate the rulers cannot hurt you with their wind
spells. From here, start killing all the units that come to you. You
should be able to trigger any missing duels this way since the enemy
will have to come to you eventually. For Song Xian and Hua Tuo, just
put them directly above or below the gate entrance so they are
adjacent to the enemy officer; this will trigger the duel, but keep
them out of range of attack.

Once you've got everything you want, send Hua Tuo to the escape point
to end the level. I don't recommend trying to kill all the enemies as
you will likely not have enough time to do so. If you want to use your
seal from the last mission, make sure to use it before you escape.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story: Since Sishui pass fell, Lu Bu is sent to guard Hulao Pass against the
Alliance. You're back to using Lu Bu, Zang Ba, and Gao Shun; you will
also have Zhang Liao in your army now. If you must have some beans, you
can buy them now. If you managed to pick up the Ancestral Sword from
Sishui, consider equipping it on Lu Bu.

=========================================================
Battle 4: Hulao Pass
=========================================================

Player Units:

Lu Bu
Zhang Liao
Zang Ba
Gao Shun

Victory:

Move all units to the escape point in 20 turns (Lu Bu must be last)

Medal:

Move all units to the escape point in 10 turns

Enemies:

Cao Ren (Horse)
Cao Hong (Infantry)
Xiahou Dun (Horse)
Yue Jin (Infantry)
Li Dian (Infantry)
Xiahou Yuan (Horsebow)
Cao Cao (Warlord)
Guan Yu (Horse)
Zhang Fei (Horse)
Liu Bei (Warlord)
Ji Ling (Horse)
Yuan Shu (Horse)
Chunyu Qiong (Infantry)
Zhang He (Horsebow)
Gao Lan (Horsebow)
Gao Gan (Horsebow)
Yan Liang (Horse)
Wen Chou (Horse)
Yuan Shao (Warlord)

Enemy Reinforcements:

Huang Gai (Horse)
Cheng Pu (Horse)

Allies:

Cavalry x 3
Mounted Archer x 3
Soldier x 2
Archer x 2

Special Items:

Golden Armor (defeat Huang Gai)
Chain Mail (defeat Cheng Pu)

Rewards:

2000 gold

Events:

After a few turns, Huang Gai and Cheng Pu will arrive to the east.

Notes:

You have a very strange starting position here. Although it's not as
bad as last time, you have no healer here, so you need to be very
careful. Move Lu Bu, Zhang Liao, and Gao Shun back towards the gate
while your cannon fodder allies occupy the enemies. Zang Ba is pretty
weak against the enemies inside the gate so don't let him get
surrounded. Take out the Wei forces inside the gate so you can get
inside the gate.

Once you've made it through, you will need to decide whether you want
the Special Items or the seal. Huang Gai and Cheng Pu arrive quite
late, and they must come to you from behind all the other enemies, so
it is very unlikely that you can defeat them and escape within 10
turns. If you want the seal, then quickly retreat to the back and
send everyone to the escape point, making sure to send Lu Bu last.

If you are going for the items, then put two people to block the gate
(likely Lu Bu and Zhang Liao or Gao Shun) and hold out until the Wu
officers reach you. This is a lot harder than the last mission since
you do not have a healer here and you must rely on beans. If you do
attempt this, make sure to leave yourself enough turns to make it
to the escape point once you've got the items.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story: Dong Zhuo burns Luoyang and departs for Chang An. Lu Bu is ordered to
guard the rear. You'll get Song Xian, Wei Xu, and Hou Cheng back now and
they join your army. Replace any beans you used in the last battle.

=========================================================
Battle 5: Battle at Yingyang
=========================================================

Player Units:

Lu Bu
Zhang Liao
Wei Xu
Song Xian
Hou Cheng
2 Other Units

Victory:

Defeat Cao Cao in 20 turns
(If Cao Cao escapes, it counts as a victory)

Seal Conditions:

Defeat Cao Cao

Enemies:

Infantry x 4
Archer x 4
Horse x 2
Horsebow x 2
Yue Jin (Infantry)
Li Dian (Infantry)
Xiahou Dun (Horse)
Xiahou Yuan (Horsebow)
Cao Ren (Horse)
Cao Cao (Warlord)

Allies:

Horse x 2
Horsebow x 2
Fan Chou (Horse)
Zhang Ji (Horse)
Li Su (Magician)
Li Ru (Strategist)

Duels:

Lu Bu vs. Xiahou Dun (Xiahou Dun's Burst increases)
Zhang Liao vs. Yue Jin (Yue Jin retreats)

Special Items:

Shadow Runner (defeat Cao Cao)
Leather Helmet (defeat Yue Jin)

Rewards:

Notes:

This battle isn't too bad if you just want to beat it. All you need
to do is move all your units together and hold off the Wei troops
until Cao Cao takes off. Li Ru and your allies will back you up here;
Li Ru will even heal you if your health gets low, so don't be too
quick to use your beans.

If you want to kill Cao Cao and get the seal, you will need to break
through the enemies and chase him down using whoever has Red Hare.
Remember that he can only escape on that one square, so if you put
someone on it you can kill him before he can get away. This seal is a
bit more difficult than the ones you've had before, and you don't need
to get every seal in the game, so feel free to choose not to get this
one if it's too much of a hassle.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story: Since the Alliance broke up, Dong Zhuo and Li Ru attempt to thwart Wang
Yun's plan to kill them. Unfortunately for them, Lu Bu finds out that
they took Diaochan, and he kills them in a rage. Li Jue and Guo Si have
their armies outside the city, so with the help of their adviser Jia Xu,
they prepare to attack Chang'an.

If you got the Leather Helmet from the last battle, go ahead and throw
that on Hou Cheng since no one else can wear it. If you have the Shadow
Runner, one of the Cavalry units might do well with it. Buy beans if
you need to.

=========================================================
Battle 6: Chang'an
=========================================================

Player Units:

Lu Bu
6 Other Units

Victory:

Get Lu Bu to the inside of the castle in 20 turns

Medal:

Trigger all duels

Enemies:

Horse x 12
Horsebow x 8
Infantry x 4
Archer x 4
Li Jue (Infantry)
Guo Si (Infantry)
Jia Xu (Magician)
Hu Juer (Fighter)
Fan Chou (Horse)
Zhang Ji (Horse)
Li Su (Magician)

Allies:

Horse x 5
Horsebow x 5

Duels:

Lu Bu vs. Li Su (Li Su dies)
Gao Shun vs. Zhang Ji (Zhang Ji dies)
Zang Ba vs. Fan Chou (Fan Chou dies)

Special Items:

Dragon Robe (kill Hu Juer)
Bandana (defeat Jia Xu)

Rewards:

3000 gold

Notes:

You're surrounded, but you have allies here to help out. First head
south and clear out the enemies behind you. Your northern allies will
go get themselves killed by the enemy officers; not much you can do
about that. Once you've secured your rear, take care of the enemies
moving south towards you. Kill them all and continue north to reach
Li Jue's group. They're a bit stronger so be careful fighting them.
Make sure to kill Jia Xu and Hu Che Er for their items. Once all the
enemies outside the castle are dead, head for the gates and start
beating up the enemies inside. Trigger the three duels to get the
seal, then either kill everyone or move Lu Bu to the inner castle to
win.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story: Lu Bu takes Diao Chan and flees Chang'an. Later, in the camp, you'll
meet Chen Gong. He'll join your army and give you the Sky Scorcher, so
equip your new gear. Give the Bandanna to Chen Gong and the Robe to
whoever you want. Potions are now on sale for 900 gold; you may want to
get one for Chen Gong.

=========================================================
Battle 7: Invasion of Puyang
=========================================================

Player Units:

Lu Bu
Chen Gong
6 Other Units

Victory:

Defeat all enemies in 25 turns

Medal:

Trigger all duels

Enemies:

Horse2 x 19
Horsebow2 x 12
Infantry2 x 4
Archer2 x 4
Cao Ren (Horse2)
Yu Jin (Archer2)
Cao Anmin (Horsebow2)
Cao Ang (Horse2)

Allies:

Yellow Turban x 9

Duels:

Lu Bu vs. Cao Ren (Cao Ren retreats)
Zhang Liao vs. Yu Jin
Gao Shun vs. Cao Ang (Cao Ang retreats) *required for later duel

Special Items:

Way of Peace (at least 1 Yellow Turban survives)

Rewards:

1000 gold

Notes:

Looks like a lot of units, but once again you'll be holding them off
by using the choke points at the gates. Move all your units to the
north gate so you can concentrate your attacks on the enemies there.
Chen Gong will be helpful here by using multi-fire spells and healing
your injured units. Keep slugging away at them. Your turban friends
will help you out from the inside, although they tend to get
slaughtered pretty quickly; try to protect at least one so you can
get the item. Send a couple units into the castle when you can to
make all the enemies head your way, then just use the gate to pick
them off two at a time. Once you've killed most of them, send some
units down to the center to grab some items from the tents. Then just
kill the rest of them to conquer the castle.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story: Cao Cao finds out you took Puyang so he calls off his attack on Tao
Qian and comes back to retake the castle. Diaochan will join your
army now. This next battle is tougher than what you've done before, so
stock up on beans and rice, and maybe a potion or two for Chen Gong.
Don't blow all your money, though.

=========================================================
Battle 8: Defence of Puyang
=========================================================

Player Units:

Lu Bu
Diao Chan
Zhang Liao
6 Other Units

Victory:

Defeat all enemies in 25 turns

Medal:

Defeat all enemies in 15 turns

Enemies:

Horsebow2 x 10
Horse2 x 7
Bandit x 4
Fighter2 x 4
Cao Hong (Foot2)
Xun You (Geomancer2)
Cao Ren (Horse2)
Cheng Yu (Strategist2)
Yu Jin (Foot2)
Li Dian (Foot2)
Xu Chu (Bandit)
Xiahou Dun (Horse2)
Xiahou Yuan (Horsebow2)
Xun Yu (Strategist2)
Dian Wei (Fighter2)
Cao Cao (Ruler)

Duels:
Lu Bu vs. Xiahou Yuan (Xiahou Yuan retreats)
Zang Ba vs. Xu Chu
Gao Shun vs. Dian Wei (Gao Shun's defense lowered)
(only if Gao Shun dueled Cao Ang at Puyang I)
*required for a later duel

Rewards:

1000 gold

Notes: You start out split up, and there are a lot of enemies between you,
so you may have a hard time trying to get back together. Just take
your time and deal with the enemies as they come to you, while moving
forward each time. Remember to use the castle wall as a shield
against side attacks. Once you reach the corner, use Chen Gong to
heal whichever group he didn't start in and then take care of the
next wave of enemies. After that will be Cao Cao and the final wave;
be sure to watch out for Dian Wei. As long as you don't take too long
moving forward, you should have enough time to complete the batle in
15 turns and get the medal. Make sure you trigger the duel with Dian
Wei before you kill him.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story: Cao Cao retreats, but he's determined to retake Puyang. Chen Gong
suggests using a secret plan against Cao Cao. Restock on beans if you
used a lot of them in the last battle.

=========================================================
Battle 9: Deception at Puyang
=========================================================

Player Units:

Lu Bu
Zhang Liao
7 Other Units

Victory:

Defeat Cao Cao in 20 turns

Medal:

Trigger Zhang Liao & Li Dian, Diao Chan vs. Cao Cao

Enemies:

Archer2 x 7
Foot2 x 5
Bandit2 x 4
Horsebow2 x 4
Horse2 x 2
Liu Ye (Catapult2)
Yu Jin (Foot2)
Cao Hong (Foot2)
Yu Jin (Archer2)
Cheng Yu (Strategist2)
Cao Ren (Horse2)
Li Dian (Foot2)
Xun You (Geomancer2)
Xiahou Dun (Horse2)
Xiahou Yuan (Horsebow2)
Xu Chu (Bandit2)
Dian Wei (Fighter2)
Cao Cao (Ruler)

Duels:

Diao Chan vs. Cao Cao
Gao Shun vs. Dian Wei (only if you did this duel at Puyang II)

Conversations:

Zhang Liao & Li Dian

Special Items:

Wrath of Heaven (defeat Cao Cao)

Rewards:

1000 gold

Notes:

Killing Cao Cao here is not all that hard. Here is a good setup:
Have Diao Chan and Chen Gong be in the bottom section, put Gao Shun
and Zang Ba in the east section with Lu Bu, and place the others
where you like. Make sure Lu Bu has Red Hare equipped. Now, have
Zang Ba move in and cast Defense-Down on Cao Cao, then Lu Bu should
move to the square above him and hit him. Chen Gong should move up
and use a fire spell on Cao Cao. Diao Chan should stand in the
middle of the center area. When the enemy's turn comes, the inner
enemies should focus on Diao Chan, while the ones at the west gate
move closer. On the next turn, Xun You will probably be in Lu Bu's
way, so use Diao Chan and Chen Gong to kill him. Then send Lu Bu
west after Cao Cao. If you position Lu Bu diagonally left of Cao
Cao, he can't escape! From here you should easily be able to finish
him off. Make sure to trigger the duels and use your medals before
you kill him.

=============
INTERLUDE
=============

Story:

Cao Cao still won't give up and he plans another attack on Puyang.
You probably didn't use many beans in the last battle so you should
have a decent amount of gold. Buy a lot of beans and rice for this
next fight, you're going to need them. If you picked up the Sword of
Heaven, give that to someone too.

Liu Bei has to march out to battle Yuan Shu, and Zhang Fei is left in
charge of Xuzhou. Lu Bu decides to march against Xuzhou to restore
order since Zhang Fei is doing a bad job.

You probably used up most of your beans/rice on that last fight, so
buy a few more now. You probably won't need them, but every little bit
helps.
