The Last Warlord--an indie ROTK strategy game

Discussion of other Three Kingdoms games (e.g. Destiny of an Emperor and Dynasty Tactics) and other games by Koei (e.g. Samurai Warriors).

According to the notes you can now use "employ" for prisoners, so you can use frontline officers to hire them. A welcome change.

Did you play the first? Game 2 made some very welcome improvements though there are a few new bugs that are still handing around.

I haven't played any Total War to be honest. Should I start with the first?
My old laptop was under specs but I recently bought a new one that should be strong enough.
Reading the discussions here and on Reddit and watching some playthroughs on youtube really got me interested.

It's too bad about the battle AI. That's why I was waiting to see some reports on action later in the game, if the AI is weak there, I'll hold off on picking it up for now.

I did slightly rekindle my interest in XIII, while I wait to see what develops with the new Total War title. Also had my interest piqued briefly by Crusader Kings II, but started reading reviews and got chased off by the price tag.

2 is all around better and the games don't tell a connected story, but the games link together--owning 1 lets you download a large campaign map in 2 where you can play as the first game races (including any DLC you own) as well as game 2 races.

I would say AI is The Last Warlord's big flaw right now, yeah. It just doesn't seem to focus much on research and isn't very good in battle.

Good call on your part. I'm a little surprised the dev team isn't making this a priority.
The pathfinding is so bad that on certain battle maps the AI will starve itself to death on the opposite side of a mountain rather than realizing it can go around it to attack the player.

The Gal Civ series still seems to have some of the best AI I have seen. They keep track of what the player is doing and take steps to counter, find ways to exploit weaknesses and use every resource at their disposal. Even the old X-com had some uncannily clever AI at times.
Oh well, I have faith they'll get some improvements in TLW. They did some other things in the game very well imo.

Thanks for the info Gray, 1 seems the way to go first I think. It's a bit of an investment (mostly time wise) so it might be another month or so. But looking forward to trying it out :)

One possibility I've considered is that since the game isn't feature complete yet they're avoiding putting work into AI for features that might be removed or significantly changed.

Well, be sure to stop by the Warhammer thread in Other Games when you do.

Edit: Another update on Februrary 9. Interesting notes:
*Rank no longer affects how many troops you can control, just your "level" (from deeds)--this is done to balance smaller forces.
*Infantry, cavalry, and archery units now do more damage from the officer's Combat, Riding, and Archery skills, respectively.
*Citys get weakened development when you fight battles at the walls, so there is now incentive to ride out and meet the enemy.
