Warriors All-Stars

Discussion of other Three Kingdoms games (e.g. Destiny of an Emperor and Dynasty Tactics) and other games by Koei (e.g. Samurai Warriors).

Warriors All-Stars

This game has largely flown under my radar but I saw a positive review of it on Facebook today.

Anyone else heard anything about it? People excited? Anyone know what the cast is? People happy with whose included and whose not?

I loved the WO series as I enjoyed seeing some of my favourite historical personages in a fresh story so I'm hoping this will be good. Although if Sun Ce isn't in it then it will lose one of it's big appeal factors.

Done a little bit of research and found the character list. Representing DW is:
1) Lu Bu

2) Zhao Yun - so far so good, they are the poster boys of the series after all. They might not be my fabourite characters but they would be who I'd expect to be there!

3) Wang Yuanji - wouldn't be my choice but I guess they wanted a female character? I'd have gone for SSX myself but I can see why they picked her.

4) Zhou Cang - Really? Like I understand wanting anew character but when you've only got 4 slots? No Guan Yu, Zhuge Liang or Cao Cao but Zhou Cang.

Seems ridiculous to me.

Two from Shu, one from Jin, one from Other, and absolutely none from Wei or Wu... Maybe they'll have to rename it from the Three Kingdoms period to the One Kingdom And Others period. >_>
Unless I specifically say otherwise, assume I am talking about historical Three Kingdoms, and not the novel.

In memory of my beloved cats, Anastasia (9/30/06-9/18/17, illness) and Josephine (1/19/06-9/23/17, cancer).

Yeah! Good point! I have no issues with Lu Bu representing the others and Zhao Yun Shu. Then we should have had Cao Cao or Zhang Liao repping Wei and Zhou Yu or Gan Ning repping Wu in my opinion!

Well it's a fan-favorite sort of game, Zhao Yun and Wang Yuanji continually score ridiculously high and while the East doesn't seem to love Lu Bu (I don't get it...) the West seems to adore him. Hence why he made it in. Zhou Cang only made it in because they wanted to preview a little bit of DW9 with Musou All-Stars.

I like the idea, but as I haven't played half of the games I can't really consider buying it.

I didn't know that. I've only used her on WO3 - what is it that makes her so popular?

Well, this game didn’t get much attention here!

I’ve been playing it a lot lately and enjoy it quite a bit. I like how fast paced it feels. It’s fun bringing in teammates to do their special abilities (kinda like the Capcom Vs. fighting games), and the “Musou Rush” is kind of an interesting take on the normal rush, though perhaps a tad cheesy with the festival music and disco lights. :P The overworld map works very similarly to Spirit of Sanada’s, so you can choose what missions you want to do and some are time-sensitive leading you to have to make decisions on what to sacrifice.

There’s a couple things that I feel like might be cool for the main DW series to adopt:

- the new morale system (called Bravery here) is character-specific instead of army-specific. It kinda combines the feel of the man-earth-heaven system with morale, and it gives incentive to complete side-quests during battles since they boost your Bravery quite a lot. With high Bravery you can even call in your teammates to fight alongside you and there are some unique attacks with certain pairings. I always felt the general morale system of DW was kinda pointless by comparison.

- the Hero cards, which replaces equipping weapons. I like how weapons, skills, stat buffs, etc., are all lumped onto one equippable item. They unlock powerful “Friend” skills too. It’s fun seeing what card drops you get, especially in later stages when they get quite powerful. They can be sold/crafted as well. I don’t think by any means that DW should give up weapons in exchange for cards, but I think incorporating cards in addition to weapons may be a cool change. Especially if they go the extra mile and let cards be traded with other players!

I can understand not finding All-Stars appealing due to the small number of Warriors characters. But personally I’m a big fan of Dead or Alive, Deception, and Nioh as well so there was plenty for me to choose from. (And Opoona! I never though he’d be seen again!)

My biggest gripe so far is the lack of Free mode. I would’ve liked to just replay some maps after completing a story.

Best of all: unlike Spirit of Sanada, which was released shortly before, All-Stars actually runs perfectly on PC. I can’t even get Sanada to run with an fps higher than 10 despite far exceeding its requirements, yet All-Stars is nearly perfect 60 fps; I’ve had very very few performance drops. I swear Koei has two different PC porting teams... there’s been a pattern of crap-port/good-port going for a while. Sadly DW9 was apparently given to the Sanada team instead. :/
Have a question about a book or academic article before you buy it? Maybe I have it!
