That duel didn't happen, quite possibly the three brothers were not even there and the camapign against Dong Zhuo was never much rewritten.

Bar the novel omens and with less of a role for a singing girl, pretty close to how novel describes. Lu Bu sleeps with serving girl, feels guilty, Dong in a fit of temper over something throws halberd with further unnerves Lu Bu and plotters like Wang Yun got Lu Bu onside. Lured Dong to audience, kill him.

What is the historical reason for Xu Shu's departure to Wei? As I noticed that in the topic post, it said he left of his own desire and not by a false letter.

During the retreat across Jing, Xu Shu's mother fell into Wei hands and so he left, having a decent career in Wei.

So while mother played a part, there wasn't an evil Machiavellian ploy involved.

xu shu have decent career ? but I never read xu shu ever go to war with wei army ? he went to civilian service instead ?
then his stratagems mastery is wasted....

Dong Zhou was talking about the historical Xu Shu, who had managed to climb to the position of Imperial Minister/Censor (御史中丞 yushi zhongcheng) at the Wei court. This post is responsible of "maintaining disciplinary surveillance over officials of the palace and central government". Under the 9-rank system it is placed at the fourth rank, which is as important as a province inspector. It is not a military post, but a decent one nonetheless.

Meanwhile, the historical Xu Shu displayed no "stratagems mastery" at all. Liu Bei did trust him. Zhuge Liang befriended him and even praised his capability of handling domestic affairs. Yet there were not any direct evidence to his military arts, except that he was pretty good at fencing/swordsmanship.

huge difference of the novel and history is chen gong
1. never involved in that cao cao lu boshe incident
2. a cao cao subordinate who betray cao cao and bring lu bu in pu yang with zhang miao, not a loyal goodhearted person like in the novel or RTK2010... far from that...

Another difference, im sure has been mentioned but Cao zhen was actually an amazing commander
Despite the novel he defended against ZL twice and emerged victorious. He died of illness though not due to a letter by ZL. Sima yi really only had a place in the 4th and 5th campaign i believe.
