When was Sima Yi replaced by Cao Zhen? The two were in very different positions till Zhen died.

I'm speaking from the novel, as I have little grasp of the actual history, but in the novel, Cao Zhen continually appealed to Cao Rui to replace Sima Yi with him, and it happened two or three times.

Cao Pi gave Cao Zhen and Cao Xiu rank. Not as high as the positions that Cao Rui gave them, but still. Both he and Rui refused to grant any other Cao's high office, like Cao Zhi and some of Cao Pi's other brothers.

Cao Pi wasn't very trusting, and he passed a bit of that onto Rui. Rui however relied on his uncles a bit, and therefore promoted them. I think he may have feared Sima Yi, and at the same time knew he needed Sima Yi.

He probably was surprised by the man's ability but if he feared him he wouldn't have made him his son's regent with Cao Shuang.

He made him regent, with Cao Shuang holding more power in order to try to use Sima Yi, but not give him control. It didn’t work though.

Why he made Cao Shuang a regent is beyond me. He was considered a good judge of character back then.

He was most likely at wits end as to who he would use to balance Sima Yi.

He was meant to be one of four but two of the other regents fell out of favour. Makes sense though, one of the gentry and one of the Cao family which would hopefully balance each other out.

Who were the other two regents, and how did they fall out of favour?
