Meh, he gave it up eventually. His situation wasn't as bad as Cao Mao, who was a puppet until he stood up for himself. He didn't have much to lose anyway.
I've a brave warrior in my army. Shen Ai is his name, and he can slay this Hua Xiong.

That is true. His family was dead, the empress was dead and most loyal court officials were dead.

He had other friends and family to lose, he had already seen his pregnant wife taken away and killed which I imagine was rather devastating.

That was my original point, but who was left? The new empress was Cao Cao's daughter.

Xun Yu and other academic friends, his children, his concubines, Yang Biao...

Xun Yu would not have joined in a plan to kill Cao Cao, and Cao Cao couldn't afford to kill him. Yang Biao got sacked by Cao Cao anyways.

Cao Cao did force Xun Yu's death in the end so yes he could. Yang Biao was only alive because he was in retirement and pretending to have difficulties walking. Xian acts and fails, somebody he cares about will die and quite probably more then one loved one or friend or loyalist would be killed.

Xun Yu's death was mysterious, but do you really think Cao Cao would kill someone who considered a close friend?

Xian was unfortunate, but I guess he couldn't fight anymore. His concubines could do what? Unfortunately, women didn't have to much power unless you were an empress.

Most sources say it was forced suicide. It makes sense given the recent events in that time-line and yes, it makes sense with Cao Cao. The man was ruthless, very very ruthless. The man buried alive an army, massacred a considerable part of a province, hunted down a childhood bully to lands even further south then Wu. He executed some very loyal officers like Cui Yan. So why not Xun Yu if he becomes a threat?

Because the only thing Xun Yu was going to do was prevent Cao Cao from becoming emperor, and Cao Cao didn't want to become emperor anyways.
Xun Yu was probably very old by then as well. He may have simply have died of illness or old age.
