Novel, yes.

Historically, he actually told his attendants to kill him at and send his head to Cao Cao. They were unwilling to do so (in history he was usually very kind to his subordinates; for instance he never beat Hou Cheng), so he surrendered. He did offer to serve Cao Cao but he didn't beg for his life; he simply called Liu Bei out on getting him killed after he'd saved Liu Bei's life in the past.

Hmmm, this is a far more admirable picture of him. I will spread the word!
Still, that means he might be braver than I thought.
Still think Ji Ping was the bravest and most loyal though.
I've a brave warrior in my army. Shen Ai is his name, and he can slay this Hua Xiong.

Wei has no more famous commanders, Shen Ai takes lead of the vanguard!

LGZ portrayed him very darkly then.

Indeed, but that novel was very strange and biased. They praised him for his immense battle prowess but also made him a coward. Not a very fair exchange.

Now quoting Eragon, as this made me remember Brom's saying of 9 parts fool, 1 part brave. That is Ji Ping's portrayal. Lü Bu was portrayed as a total fool, but rather, he knew his shortcomings, and was brave enough to die for the safety of his soldiers.

Unlike Xian who just sat down and waited till Wei destroyed his dynasty,

Apart from the constant plotting till his will seems to have finally been broken?

Well Ji Ping was loyal for he fought for an almost dead cause. He withstood major torture worse than some I have read about during that period and held on, dying with true honour, I felt.

Xian plotted, but in the end, why not make a last ditch effort? Try your best and fight until the end, I say. Only if he actually wanted to rebuild a dynasty.

Cao Cao and Cao Pi weren't actually doing anything to Xian. Each time he tried, a loved on died, therefore, he decides to stop.

More like doing things in his name. It probably shamed him to be used as a puppet when his ancestors accomplished so much.

Still, would you want to keep sacrificing loved ones simply to try and overthrow someone who is probably the main reason you're still alive even if they're mistreating you?
