I'll talk about this a bit, since it's what brought me here. And I have something to share which might be useful.

Zyzyfer wrote:Nope. I don't play XI any more...

Talk about being late to the party.

I read the whole thread. I wish I could have been here for the discussions on creating a set of what if scenarios and fanficing it. Fictional battles and deaths to build the scenario. I love the concept of the Reversal custom scenario. I'd have sank my teeth into that. A pity that it never happened due to lack of interest. Whether one more interested person would have made the difference I don't know.

There's talk in the thread of Yuan Shu being very large and powerful in 193. I'd love to see a scenario with that Yuan Shu in it.

It was amusing but also very much understandable seeing how much trouble was had in trying to rein in the stallion of a man known as Gongsun Zan. I am very fond of doing AI playthroughs, and believe me I know how strong his faction is.

It was overall really interesting seeing the X Series being built, and learning the design philosophies behind it and the limitations of what they could do. So many conversations I wish I could jump into but ended years ago. Sadly one of those limitations is the reason it's taken me so very long to discover the X Series. The biographies are a real highlight of the game for me, and unfortunately they can't change the biographies for the added officers here. I didn't know of this, and so when I saw guys in the X Series many years ago with biographies saying they're the God of Death and such, sadly I was fooled and dismissed the X Series. The officers might as well have been Darth Vader and Khal Drogo. I don't want such people in my ROTK games. Anyway, fast forward through the years to some days ago and I ended up stumbling into this thread while on the hunt for more custom scenarios and learning the truth of the X Series.

Those same biographies that are a highlight for me though enabled me to produce what I will show you. Because knowing a lot of the officers just from their biographies and / or portraits (another big highlight of the game for me) now, I was able to tell who was a new officer and who wasn't. A few I had to do some digging, but the vast majority I could tell just by looking at their portrait and reading their biography. I wanted to know all the new officers. Most are names I'm not familiar with. It's such a shame they can't have biographies. If biographies have been written for these custom officers anywhere, I would dearly love to read them. Anyway, I went in and documented the forces of every officer in every X Series scenario and searched every city in every X series scenario for custom officers and documented them. This isn't a perfect account of every officer, as I know some X Series scenarios have custom officers in who pop up later than the starting year, so I will not have found them. It's also possible I might not have searched all of the cities perfectly or made other mistakes, but I did the best I could. Anyway, here's the work I did. The numbers in barackets next to the forces are (number of new officers in the force/number of extra officers they have compared to the original scenario). The * next to officers for it being their last appearance is done with historical scenarios in mind. So for example, Ou Xing's two guys have a * for 184, but they're also in 185 and 187, both fictional, so they have a * there too.

Re: X Series

Unread postby Zyzyfer » Mon Jul 29, 2019 11:10 am

If it were more reasonable to effectively alter the AI or, basically, properly hex edit the game mechanics itself, I'd be tempted to return to XI. I still play XIII but it's frankly a bad and broken game. I basically pushed XI as far as I could with these modded scenarios...

All that said, I can't say that it's the case for every last added officer, but quite a few of them ended up being incorporated in one way or another into XIII, and that includes bios.

...the bad news is that those bios can't just be copied and pasted, unfortunately!

Hi! :)

Yes, a big reason I made and stacked up all those pictures in the XI discussion thread of the Yellow Turbans I created to add to 184 X, was so I could easily compare their biographies for trying to create their stats.

The link in this thread to Gray Riders' info is dead. I was able to find this one though:

http://www.mediafire.com/view/?uj7gcjd2a7hoiac

But it clearly misses a lot of the new officers in the X Series. It has short bios. Do you know if a more recent version of it was made and is available?

I also found this thread, which has another dead link:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=23245&hilit=officers+file#p587830

A file made by Lezard, and you grabbed it. Do you still have it?

For each of the vanilla scenarios I've made a txt log telling the basic stats of the new officers.

I'm guessing it doesn't have the biographies, but I'd still like all the stats in an easy file like that.

If you want to chat about the X Series, or what you might have had as an idea for a "what if" series, I wouldn't mind. I never got a full picture of what you were going for with your what if series. I remember the Yuans having a three way split between the three brothers and Yuan Shu having grown and clashing with them. And while this is fine, I'd probably take it in a different direction. I'd have the Yellow Turbans linger around as a significant force for a long time, filling in some of that empty space in the earlier scenarios after being beaten out of the North and you could have Lu Bu become a really powerful force. I don't mean he has to flood the map, but this new, intelligent Lu Bu with 4-6 cities and a good officer core would be interesting to see. You could have him allying with Yuan Shu and then growing into the Yuan Brothers and taking advantage of their infighting after their victory at Guan Du, and forcing them to all ally with each other to face this monster. So 200 would have the Yuans with like 9 cities between them like you planned, but the scenario after, Lu Bu would have like 6 cities and they'd have like 6 cities between them and all allied against Lu Bu. It's a pity the Nanman are so unique, as imagine having them spreading out into the map and starting out earlier. Because of Liu Biao's poor AI, I'd get him out of there. He could perhaps be smothered by the Turbans and so his officers would pick up the slack after all the Turbans die off. Or just simply get him killed and put Cai Mao in charge of the faction. Just some thoughts anyway. Oh, and we could have our own epic reversals in the story like Guan Du / Chi Bi / He Fei / Yi Ling. For example I noticed you made Ji Ling into a monster, you could give him a reason for those stats by doing something extraordinary.

I'd have to poke around on my external drive to check for those files, probably will take a bit to get around to that. I don't have high hopes for anything you would find useful though.

(I do have an excel file detailing every officer change I made in XIII but since they dropped some stats that were in XI, its usefulness is also questionable I think)

I did also want to clarify something about that proposed alternative scenario of mine that never ended up being made. It was basically a what-if, the condition being what if Cao Cao, Sun Jian, and Liu Bei never existed. As you could guess, it would be pretty chaotic. I did plan on Lu Bu being a major threat at one point. Yuan Shao was supposed to live longer (just a few years), under the assumption that his condition would not be aggravated by losses to Cao Cao. Didn't have major plans for the Turbans - they could certainly hang about but as a shadow of their 184 selves. Yuan Shu would play a huge role, and upon his death, the country would be a chaotic mess.

I had things pretty much mapped out through all of the maps at the time, but the big issue was how to fill the void of no historical battles with some conflicts and simulate the deaths of some major figures. In fact, that is where discussion came to an end and the project fizzled out.

I would appreciate that. Don't worry, I'm not in a hurry to get my hands on anything you might have.

You could send me the XIII file, it certainly wouldn't hurt, and I might someday end up getting XIII.

Well, I already said I'd like to see that 193 with a powerful Yuan Shu, so I have no problem at all with a powerful Yuan Shu in this. And happy to see Lu Bu getting strong, and good call on Yuan Shao living longer without Cao Cao aggravating his condition. You could visually show us the scenario maps. I don't know how hard the hex editing is, but I can't imagine it would be too difficult to move ownership of some cities around just to create the required colours on the map to show us. Actually, if it was easier, you could use the Blank Scenario and just put some custom factions on the map with the correct colours.

I think you'd need a solid framework of what you wanted in order to get others to collaborate. Both for the course of your story (which it sounds like you already have) and these battles, but especially the battles. Are you looking for stories being written or could it be as simple as something like X engaged Y at Z. X won, A, B and C died in the battle, D, E, F, G and H were executed by X. Someone like Yuan Shu I imagine would give the headsman and his axe plenty of work, and I don't think Lu Bu would be particularly merciful either. I think you'd have to get the ball rolling yourself by producing examples of what you're looking for for the rest of us to follow those examples. With the visual maps it would be helpful, you'd have two scenario maps, and then we'd just have to figure out how we're getting from Map A to Map B. We'd need to know how much death you were wanting and stuff like that.

I think I'd want to remove from the game not just Cao Cao, Sun Jian, Liu Bei and their immediate families, but also anyone who's really good and only associated with those factions. Oh, and I'd think about being particularly ruthless with Wei aligned officers. There are so many of them, they give too much of an advantage to anyone at or near their compatibility levels. It would otherwise be hard to find forces for these people and hard to have them killed believably by these lesser factions if you needed them killed. There are a few people who could do it though, Lu Bu, Yan Liang, Wen Chou, *maybe* Ji Ling... or something like a nasty ambush made by Jia Xu. If you want these people to stay, they could also clash with each other. Or maybe you want them to shine, that's the thing, I don't know things like this, we'd need to know things like this to work well with you. Getting them out would also create more room for you to add more custom officers for these other factions, and allow other officers to shine in your maps. The Gray Riders file for instance has more guys who didn't make it in, Lu Bu I remember has quite a few unused guys that I was looking at and thinking about creating myself. Those Yellow Turban guys I made you could put in if you wanted. I'd like to see that Ma Xiang Yellow Turban rebellion down in Yi Province. I think it might be an interesting faction to play too. Seperate from the Turbans but allied with them. Zhang Ju could go in too in Xiang Ping.

Btw, something I'm curious about. Is it possible to create a custom scenario that starts before 184?

I've been thinking some more about this.

About your Yuan Family split, when I was looking for new scenarios I found a couple that I didn't have before, and one of them was Rival Wei Sons. I haven't played it yet, but the story is Cao Cao was slain at Chi Bi, and his sons broke up his terrritory between themselves. Having looked into these new factions, I was impressed with how diverse they are. In terms of the geography they cover, the resources they have at their disposal and the types of officers they have at the disposal, they're all quite different from each other. That should be brought to the Yuan Family split to make each one substantially different to play.

I don't know what geography they would cover, but I was thinking like Yuan Tan in history, his faction was weak, and he could be weak here. So he wouldn't last long in the hands of the AI but might be good for a player to play as, and could be designed with this in mind with the officers that went with him historically. I don't know why Yuan Xi is going to turn away from his brother Yuan Shang here, but perhaps he could attract a lot of the intellectual type officers to him while Yuan Shang gets a lot of the militaristic ones. For the big ones that I guess would still be alive / still serving, maybe Yuan Shang would get Yan Liang and Wen Chou and Yuan Xi would get Zhang He, and with Zhang He would come Gao Lan.

Maybe with regard to officers where we couldn't imagine where they'd end up, if you want to keep them in, we don't have to imagine where they end up. Simply have them be searchable in the cities, and have them end up where they end up over the course of a game. I would be averse to killing off the officers that do not serve the Three Kingdoms. If their factions die in your story, they could be distributed among other factions. So many that die early on in the normal game could have extended lifespans and roles in the story.

For this in particular, I think the reasonable range of scenario years can be anywhere from 170-351, then you start getting issues possibly before or after those years (game is set to automatically end at 351 anyways)

Nice! You could have a more expansive Yellow Turban Rebellion, with the Turban officers living longer with the earlier start and if with Zyzyfer's story, could take much longer to put down and maybe see some big names die, without throwing off the rest of the timeline.

Well I should point out up front, even after reading through the old posts on it earlier in this thread, I don't plan on returning to XI to work on it, no matter how fleshed out the story gets. If anything, I'd look into implementing it somehow for XIII (which has like 60 cities and a AI-foolproof system where any sizable ruler will perform adequately).

Most of the general plot was fleshed out in those earlier discussions as well, so the only thing "missing" was basically simulating a few big wars between the two Yuan cousins, and the rulers in Yi. Regarding the Yellow Turbans specifically, since the main force gets stomped out before 190, the "plot" would have allowed for some small remnants to still be hanging out, but certainly nothing more than a couple of single-city forces scattered about, nothing organized.

As far as scenario maps, I had done up a few but have no idea where the files would be now - this was years ago now, after all. But I did make a few outlines during the discussions earlier on in this thread about how some of the forces would be laid out. So it may just be easier to give those posts another look if you're really interested in doing your own version of it...?

Alright, thanks for letting me know. It was still fun to scratch the itch anyway after reading the thread and wanting to talk about this stuff. :)

I wouldn't be able to do it myself as I can't hex edit. The best I can do is create some custom officers and add them to scenarios. Or do something like start a game controlling two forces and make them ally with each other.

Anyway, please let me know if you find anything on your external drive (or if you search it and find nothing.)
