Know what sucks?

I just figured out how to change the dialogue in ROTK10, Chinese version.

Hmm getting the chinese version always seems like a bad idea, no matter what.
Japanese - English Patches are way more common...

I haven't seen your patch yet, Burning Star, and I can't try it out because I own the Chinese version only. Do you have any screenshots? I want to see how far you got.

My patch is on kongming and in my thread. Theres also a pic, which shows a bit, but already is obsolete.

Sadly I could not copy paste most of Huang Dins Patch... but at least I took alot inspriation from his translation. Very nice if you are not to sure about a word 8-)

But overall I did not pay so much attention to 100% correctness. I and some friends just wanted to play the puk... :P

The limited space you got isnt making the whole thing any easier... but I guess its not much different from the chinese version. Or do you have more room for english letters there?

Would not be nice... because my chinese is even worse than my japanese :P

The Chinese version and the Japanese version are exactly the same filesize. The only thing that the Chinese version doesn't have that the Japanese does are the pronunciation explanations for the names - they're just blank hex spots in the Chinese version. Then again, no real reason to translate those.

Space is very limited, but it's NOT limited at all in the MSG files, which means the dialogue can be as long as it needs to be.

One advantage of getting the Chinese version is that there aren't as many patches for it, because they wait to release it until the Japanese version is pretty much bugfixed. But the Japanese version comes out first, and at this moment, has an English patch. I will make my Chinese -> English patch once the PUK comes out, of course - I could use the practice, plus I might go back and do patches for ROTKX and VIII.

Now thats interesting, even though the whole msg file did not make that much sense to me the first time I opened it I think...

Here's a screenshot of my work-in-progress MSG translation for the Chinese version. It doesn't translate other things - that would need an EXE hack - but it does translate dialogue, tooltips, and other things.

Look at the bottom and notice how the descriptions of the functions are in English.

Different officers will say different things for the same event. (Yes, I know the text doesn't wrap properly. I can't fix that.)

Just a quick hackjob translation of a few things in the .EXE.

Very nice work! Those dialogue examples you posted -- are they all preset or do they draw from a pool of words? If they are all preset lines of text with variables (for the gold amount, etc.) have you considered trying to enter multiple spaces to force words to the new line, thus rendering them properly in English? Might work...

These are all preset lines. I think I can do carriage returns, but it doesn't work on all of the dialogue, because then I might go a little over and the message will get cropped or worse (a game crashing error or something).
